Just started listening to some of Marshall Pruett's podcasts. Some of you already know them, for those of you who don't give them a shot. Really cool stuff. And funny, the PT one and Mike Hull's.

Back in the tobacco days, a document leaked out of Penske's racing budget. Roughly $10-$15 million per car per year in the mid 1990s.

Nowadays, the top teams reportedly spend -- at the top -- about $8 million a year per car (source). So less than it took in the old days... not *even* counting inflation. And there's still concerns about cost.

This is completely nuts compared to F1's 300 million per team. I know it's different as it's not a single-make, supplied engine like Indycar is, but honestly, the end result on TV and at the track is arguably about the same for both series, so why waste so much?

Arguably not the same result, if we're talking about worldwide coverage and viewership. Maybe Indy 500 is on par with F1 GPs as a single event. Rest of the races are not. "Road relevant" and "technology transfer" are mostly marketing buzzwords, but some programs in F1 and for example in WEC are more R&D driven which means more of the money is coming from R&D rather than from marketing budget, which then justifies the spending.

It looks very tiny. Almost like a Formula Ford.

It kinda reminds me of the old Zip Formula car..... Looks small from the side I guess because of how little bodywork there is around the back end.

It's much, muuuuch better than we have today. Finally a good looking car after so many years. Looks like they've finally figured out that aesthetics of the car plays a big role on making racing popular.

Formula 1 runs a serious risk of learning that the hard way they adopt halo. The prognosis is more and more losses of average ratings world wide.

I agree!

If I would complain about things, I would argue that the front wing is a little bit too large and the rear wing is a little bit too small or at least should be a little bit further back. And maybe that the aero piece in front of the rear wheels is a little too big.

But... well. F*ck that. Its a good looking car. The first one since 1996.

Looks great. I'd love to see a more round nose with a sharper tip, but it's certainly a step in the right direction, and it'll look badass on track.

Hopefully the air that will go through the roll hoop into the rear wing improves downforce in a way that we could see smaller rear wings in road course configuration.

If that sucker races as good as it looks, Indycar will be just fine.

The DW12 raced just fine until Indycar forced those bodykits through.

Yeah but it always looked like ass. At least this looks like a proper Indycar.

I've always been a fan of the original DW12.

Must say, these are just gorgeous. Aesthetically speaking, can't find one negative. Hope they test enough on the superspeedways so we don't end up with any of the usual clusterfucks.
