I don't think that football excuse works anymore, maybe a decade ago. I'm sure without the games, the race would still get the same attendance and viewers.

It's just weird because you can always say something is competing against a nascar race on tv. Oh, low ratings? No, that's because there was a new simpsons episode airing at the same time.

It absolutely still works to a degree. Me and a few people I know clearly still watch NASCAR and in fact I have a buddy who just got into it this year and loves it. But both of us DVR the races on Sundays because we are all hanging out watching football at someones house. We would not have done that years ago because we were only subjected to Pats, Jets, Giants games in my area. I was lucky to ever see a Dolphins game more than 4 times a year. Not I can watch them any weekend I choose and I'm going to watch that well before a race in the fall and I HIGHLY doubt I am the only one who does this with their team. Like I said, if this was 6-8 years ago, I'd have to drive 2 towns away to a shitty bar to watch the Dolphins. Sometimes I just didn't want to make that trip especially with drinking.

And lets not shy away from the fact that ALL major sports are seeing a decline in TV ratings. Fuck the NFL, the sport that basically has a choke hold on this country, has had huge drops this year. So what's the excuse there?

It's a bit of both.

There is more access to more sporting content, which creates more fragmentation.

But the NASCAR product and brand are not hot, so people aren't going to make an effort to watch it.
