The "crashes" in DRIVEN were the best part

This crash was not that bad, it's realistic, well filmed, and really captured the whole worrying about the driver, the stupor of the crowd, then the cheering when the driver walks away.

He wanted to make an actionmovie about Formula 1, switched to the IndyCar Series and Driven was the result.

Ah yes, Driven. The movie in which Sly could suddenly drive a whole lot faster when he started 'humming'.

"Hmmmmm mmmm hmmmmm mmmm hmmm..."

"He's going for it!"

(Cool pictures though)

I actually think there could be some truth in that however.
When I was still racing in online leagues, but also just playing Forza, whenever I was closing one someone and thought "let focus and catch him" I made more mistakes then when I was just doing my thing.
So, while humming probably is very hard when going fast, not overthinking it possibly make you go faster.

never understood what happened for him to crash, looks like he had no steering and went straight to the wall, no under or oversteering

plus Beau Brandeburg (Hugo Stigliz ftw) changes his line like an insane Schumacher to keep his place at an oval without losing control

I remember one season where I'd watch F1, then fire up the Amiga 500, and play Geoff Crammond's Grand Prix. 100% race distances at the same track as F1 had just raced on. Good times indeed...

I used to play out entire championships with my Lego's. I probably even kept score. I think I had over a 30 cars at one point. With the different sloped bricks I made different noses. The Benetton even had a raised nose. Due to my dad and uncle smoking some of them had sponsorship.
Drivers swapped teams. Senna ofcourse had the yellow helmet. At one point I ran out of helmets so some ran in knights helmets or even construction hats (safety wasn't a thing back then).
At one point I was running out of brick to properly make the cars but that also helped me in creating the low sidepods of the 1991 Lambo or the small rear wing of the 1991 Jordan.

I layed out a track with the ground plates I had + whatever I could use to mark the track. Somehow almost every race resulted in a big startcrash.
My tracks where a bit weird however by having 2 pitlanes. One for the cool teams and one for the evil bad teams.

Such good days.

Probably a 'Senna crash' that he failed to adapt properly after writing it into the original plot.

I mean, it is probably the only semi-realistic crash in the whole movie, but I wouldn't call it well directed. It's as subtly framed as a 1st year media studies student trying to ape Michael Bay. Or Stallone trying to ape the emotional side of Grand Prix

I did the same using those plastic tracks with metallic rails for remote cars. I would build the whole first sector of a given track, and spend the Saturday afternoon enacting start scenarios using the qualifying grid. At some point, my entire room floor was basically a huge oval track complete with banked turns, cars everywhere, and a complete paddock.

I think it was all the way until the end of the 2003 season, when it was replaced by something more similar (but not quite "there" yet) to the colourful streak racing we have today.

The intro, as posted by me, was last used in 2002.

A new intro, together with new graphics, were introduced for 2003.

I was gonna say, I asked because I didn't "actively" remember it but I started watching in 2003 so that might explain it :)

I remember the first time I stayed up late to watch a European F1 race - the 2004 San Marino GP

Reminds a lot of Blundells crash at Rio in 96. That one was a stuck throtlle or brake failure. Very similar impact angle. Only the roll-over was strange. The worst for me on this and most racing movies is that for a racing fan, it's so obvious how slow they actually are going when they show "racing" shots. If they only faked as far as staying on the racing line but no, they zig zag everywhere just like the pace lap.

Days of Thunder is a masterpiece close to what Driven is

interesting to see that back in the days when F1 was at hype in Brazil, several racing fans had a cult following of Days of Thunder

I saw that movie 10 times in 7 days. About the only Nascar footage I ever got up to 2005.
