The most underrated track in NASCAR.

Hopefully the weather we have now subsides by Thursday or Friday.

waiting to see the cup entry list with 34 cars

Hearing there is a chance that the Cup field will be under 40 cars this week. I think it will be 38 or 39 at most (non REC teams being Wood Brothers, and possibly Premium's #98 and Key's #30)

Really hoping there will good racing with the new package.

Well according to NASCAR: "A field for us is 36 (cars), not 40, so if we get 38 cars at California and Phoenix, we’re not disappointed."

Guess this is just normal to them.

Also looking forward to the new package. Not expecting it to light the world on fire right off the bat, but at least we may be moving in the right direction.

Lowest number of cars to start a Cup race since 1996. Lowest car count on a 1 mile or greater track since 1993 (Dover, September).

I'm looking forward to this race. The low-downforce package was made for tracks like Atlanta. Atlanta is tough on tires as it is and the addition of the low-downforce package will put the drivers to the test this weekend.

This package isn't low downforce, it's medium downforce and will suck just as much as the high downforce did, you'd be suprised just how much downforce can be generated by a 5 inch piece of metal.

I didn't know there was a medium downforce package too? Thought all the cookie cutters would use the 2015 Kentucky/Darlington package this year.

Ian is just saying that isn't really "low" downforce, but medium (relatively speaking).

The spoiler is shorter than 5 inches though. I think they're down to 3.5 now. But the teams probably did enough work to find ways to earn a lot of the lost downforce back anyway.

They should've limited it to 33. After all, that's just a number too.

Atlanta already was a much more mechanical grip kinda track, I wonder if the racing will change and by how much. Probably mostly on the restarts that everybody has new tyres. That should be better. About the pack, just watch Darlington and also Kentucky. It's so great to see they all having to get up on the well and have to hustle, also having just about every line working, just have to adapt to how your car is handling. At least when the car is alone now is much more entertaining to watch. They all seem so out of control. I compared 2015 and 2014 Darlington races. 2015 they were like 5% slower on the clock, but appeared 30% faster because it seemed so out of control, the low downforce also made the car jump over the bumps more, witch added to that wicked feeling.


Another thing, with Phoenix and Vegas it was very easy to set the power houses for the year, but Atlanta is a monster of it's own kind, the mystery will remain.

I was referring to the extra width of the sump guard more than the spoiler (it's 5 inches wider than the package they run at Kentucky), but the principle is the same, these races might be OK on the rough tracks, I think the real tests will come at places like Charlotte etc. All the time they allow the skirts and the other under body tricks, the problem will remain.

I hope I'm wrong.

We've established that high downforce (Michigan, Indy), was terrible. The standard package was mostly terrible. The lower downforce package was quite good. If NASCAR has any common sense, they will continue to push for less and less downforce. They'll probably do the opposite, somehow.

And I don't care if the cars running from 35th on back were mostly field fillers that never had a hope in winning. At least it gave other drivers a chance at a Cup seat. 39 cars on an entry list just sounds wrong.

I was under the impression that the only difference between last years LD package and this years LD package was the radiator pan is a little bigger. What is the exact difference?

Iirc it's 5 inches wider and a bit longer.

Yeah, the basic 2015 radiator pan was 38". The Kentucky/Darlington package in 2015 was 28" radiator pan. The 2016 aero package is 33"
(The splitter and spoiler are the same as the Kentucky/Darlington package from last year.)

So if the difference is just the pan, why is everyone bitching when they haven't even seen any results yet?
