I really like that approach. It still looks like a proper Indycar. As long as the cover is quick-connect, the driver could still get out quickly if the car was on fire as well as the cockpit being available to medical workers. A modern take on that wouldn't look bad at all IMO, and would help tremendously to lessen these types of accidents.

Go with LMP1 style

This is a great question that any engineer should keep in mind. Off the top of my head, the one idea I had in mind was a remotely-activated fire extinguisher system. If a driver's knocked out and can't access the fire extinguisher, a marshal, a team member, or IndyCar officials could press a button that activates a fire extinguisher to get whatever fire out and buy time for a driver. I'm no engineer, but it's a thought.

Yeah I kinda had that thought too. Especially as (even though it's been quite awhile) there is some history of deer making their way on track at Pocono as well.

This is open wheel open cockpit racing. No knee jerk reactions please , it's a formula that's worked for years so 20 mins after a bad accident we dont need a new system debated that will probably cause more issue than solve.

That said, all my thoughts and hopes with Justin, I hope we wake up to good news tomorrow.

The same thing can happen if a top fuel car wrecks and is upside down in the sand trap at the end of the track. They have quick releases on the inside, as well as an internal fire suppression system. However the NHRA Safety Safari response time is a hell of a lot quicker than anything IndyCar does.

To be fair though, it's not exactly a knee-jerk reaction - there have been a number of very serious (and in some case tragic) accidents in the last 6 or 7 years that have bought closed cockpits up, it's not just today.

The thing about the formula working for however many years isn't really a thing either. F1 had seemed to have been working very well for a number of years as of April 29th 1994. IndyCar had been working pretty well as of October 15th 2011. And you know what? They had been... but it didn't last, and lessons needed to be learned.

Whatever the lessons that are learned this time, I just hope it's not as the result of a tragedy. Met Justin at Brands Hatch in 2003 when he'd just got into F1 and he was a genuinely nice guy.

While my heart agrees 100% with what you said, my head is telling me that accidents that send popular drivers to ICU don't go over very well with today's "safety-oriented" culture. I would rather watch a slightly different Indy looking 500 than be talking to my kids in 30 years saying "There used to be this awesome thing called Indycar racing."
