Indycar uploaded a big batch of races from the '87 CART season this week, including Miami, the Marlboro Challenge all-star race, Long Beach and the Indy 500, which leaves Laguna Seca left for them to upload.

Glad to see they keep on uploading all the old races
NASCAR did the same once but it was just only 3 or 4 races

Was watching some old Indycar races from 1993 recently and couldn't help but notice how aggressive Nigel Mansells gear downshifts sounded, not sure whether it was to do with "heel and toe" downshifting, but if you listen to other drivers they seem a lot smoother.

This is actually very similar to Senna's downshifting, which you can hear really clearly on any Suzuka '89 onboards. I imagine it's a good lazy way to heel-and-toe if the rev limiter is reliable, because you basically eliminate the chance of locking the rear wheels at the cost of a lighter back end under braking. Maybe it was the style at the time in Europe?

/Edit Actually Prost does it too in the Suzuka onboards.

What you don't see from the onboard is when the driver actually releases the clutch pedal. The engine rpm goes down very quickly after a throttle blip when on neutral, so you could over-rev the engine a little early, and while it is coming down, release the clutch at the correct moment to rev-match. Other drivers may have a different timing where they release the clutch as the rising rpm matches, so it wouldn't rev as high.

The generally taught driving technique is to always rev-match and never use the engine to do any kind of input to the drivetrain during braking/entry (even if deemed beneficial), so while it sounds different I'm sure Senna and co are buttery smooth when they actually engage the clutchwheel again. Then again these are the top drivers of a whole generation we're talking about, perhaps they know better.

they used to do that to keep revving and avoid turbo lag

I read a comment on another site that once during a CART broadcast their was a "technical" issue with the commentary booth which meant Gary Gerould and Jon Beekhuis had to "fill in" and call the race from the pits until the issue was resolved, can anyone recall this and what race it was?

1998 Miller Lite 200 at Mid-Ohio.

That was the race where Moore crashed into a Penske in the pits and Andretti flipped off into China Beach at the end of the back straight.

Here's the full race now that you mention it.

There was no CART race on September 29, 1996.

But there was a classic race two weeks earlier at Laguna Seca.

With the recent passing of Dan Gurney (owner and builder of the race-winning chassis) and Keith Jackson (in his lone Indy 500 broadcast), I feel this is an appropriate race to post.

Not the most spectacular quality, but here's the final CART win for the Eagle chassis, and for the late Mike Mosley:
