If they haven't already, I bet they'll upload the 1997 Portland race in a few weeks. :D

I'll be in attendance there this year. It'll be my first race since Champ Car raced there in 2007.

They already did a few years ago. A true classic.

Basically a season review, but from Mansell's point of view.

Prost almost replaced Andretti in 1992

Saw that. That would have been immense. That Detroit race happened to be epic as it was, with Michael vs. Tracy vs. Rahal.

But it was never about Prost replacing Mario. Mario broke his fucking feet at Indy, and a replacement was needed. Teo Fabi filled in in Detroit, and Mario was back the next race at Cleveland. Also at Detroit, a certain Stefan Johansson replaced Tony Bettenhausen Jr (as he was rubbish and only wanted to run ovals from now on) and finished 3rd on his Indycar debut.

Find it quite funny considering there are at least three instances of Mario nearly doing stand-in races in F1 in the 80s - none of them replacing Prost, though

- He nearly stood in for Tambay at Renault for Detroit in 1984, but Patrick was able to take part

- He was asked to stand in for Tambay for Detroit again by Haas in 1986, but he turned it down, instead recommending Michael (who then failed to get a Superlicense - Cheever got the drive instead)

- He was asked to stand in for Berger at Ferrari for Monaco in 1989 (at the age of 49!), but couldn't test the car in advance (with the new semi-auto gearbox) so turned it down and they withdrew the second car

Mario Andretti in a Ferrari in 1989 in Monaco of all places would have been so awesome.

I'm curious about other almost-drives involving huge names in F1 (and CART). I bet there's quite a few eye-openers out there.

That's probably worthy of its own thread - one-off F1 appearances or something like that. I'm pretty sure the Autosport forum had a huge thread on that with some great pictures. Stuff like Alan Jones in a late-80s Williams and Hakkinen testing assorted things.

Mansell tested a Jordan in 1997 didn't he, before they went with Damon?

It was late 1996 ahead of a drive for 1997 alongside Ralf. However, after a test he decided he wasn't interested, so they signed Fisichella instead

The huge Autosport thread is here. Personal favourite is Kazuyoshi Hoshino reportedly being offered the 2nd Benetton for the 1994 Japanese GP, at the age of 47 - one of those that's so bizarre you'd think there probably is an element of truth in it

Turns out I was thinking of their Ultimate test driver thread, but this one is a gem!

That thread is really fascinating. Lots of TILs in that one.

Lol weber

"Ryan Dazeiyal and Sebastien Bourd-ey-ay"

That's as bad as that Aussie guy who introduced Fabrizio Giovanardi as "Fab...fab....Fabreeeezo....GENEVAY!" at bathurst one year.
