I also found this interesting from Razlan Razali Boss of the Sepang circuit:

Razlan Razali wrote:
He confessed, however, to having been won over by the new V6 turbo power units, despite expressing strong reservations before last year's race about the quieter engines compared to the ear-splitting old V8s.

"We were concerned after the feedback from Australia. Very concerned. When it finally came to Malaysia, I didn't like it. It was simply too quiet," said Razali.

"But what I noticed in the grandstands is that you get families with kids watching and enjoying Formula One better.

"I can remember in the past where a dad would put headphones on the kid and hold it. Or a kid would be too scared and start crying, wanting to go home. I think it attracts a new breed of fanbase now. And that's what you want."

But those children aren't who Bernie wants to have there!

By that logic, they massacred the place in 1997 then... :slaphead:

Apart from la Piscine's first S inside wall removal, was there any other change?

I think the track had reached its maximum balance of safety vs. challenge/entertainment in 2002 (except the tunnel exit tyrewall. The modification after Button's crash was much needed and saved Perez and Nico in 2011.)

I feel that when they modified the Swimming Pool by moving back the wall and changed La Rascasse and maybe the inside wall of Ste. Devote. Monaco has became easier for drivers to get away with it.

St Devote isn't as hairy at the start as it was before 2003.

shame. As much as I hated the artificial stadium section, the Nurburgring has been home to some really competitive recent Grand Prix.

Nurburgring is more suitable to the cars, and have changeable weather so it provides more drama

Hockenheim had only a car stuck on the straight but they didn't wanted to call safety car

Shame. I was never much of a fan of the Nurburgring after they changed the first section, but in recent years I've really enjoyed a lot of the races there.

However, that probably says more about how bad some of the new circuits are, rather than how good the Nurburgring is. But it had narrow sections, gravel traps and the weather often played a part. At least there were some challenges. I find Hockenheim pretty dull, even if the long straight + hairpin formula creates a bit of passing.

Talk about Monaco getting butchered... Look North to what happened to the once great Hockenheim. That's what butchered looks like.

I'd just as soon see the German GP always held at Nurburgring. You can call me old, out of touch, rose tinted glasses, whatever, but what they did to Hockenheim is a travesty.

Always preferred the old Hockenheim, just seeing the cars blast into the forest was awesome. Then they would come out again for the stadium section, struggling with the low downforce.

while it may not have been a demanding circuit, Hockenheim posed a unique challenge to the cars (often favouring the faster machines, but sometimes rewarding the reliable machines). Now it's just "one of those" tracks.

In some altverse, Hockenheim was never butchered.

Also certain drivers always went well there so there must have been a certain knack to it ... Gerhard Berger throughout his career being an example.

I never really understood why they added the stadium bit to the Nürburgring - this sort of thing is normally done to bring a circuit up to 'F1' length, but it wasn't that short to begin with, was it?

Wasn't it just to make better passing opportunity?

It was done to make it more attractive for spectators, because from the Mercedes grandstand you can see the cars for something like 30 seconds, but it just lost a lot of appeal. I wonder how much of spectator and tv-audience loss is due to boring tracks that are drawn onto parking lots :o

The new Hockenheim layout is a decent track in its own right, everyone is mad because they ripped up the old track and made it unusable.

The stadium section at the Nurburgring may be crap but at least it has produced some interesting bits of racing over the years.

I was reading this article which seems to suggest we could be getting wider tyres in the next few years:
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/117368

Something about that which I find a bit odd is that they seem to be talking about wider tyres & more downforce?

If they were reducing downforce & introducing wider tyres to get more mechanical grip to compensate for the downforce reduction I'd get it as I can see that improving the racing.
But surely more downforce + wider tyres/more mechanical grip will make cars even harder to follow, Shorten braking distances further & increase cornering speeds which would probably have the opposite effect & make the racing worse or is my sleep deprived brain simply not working properly?

I'd rather the focus be put on the racing & not this 'wow factor' that seems to be the current thing which Bernie & co seem desperate to create. If you have wide tyres, 1000bhp, loud engines, Tons of downforce, Tons of speed/performance, lots of sparks etc... yet the racing is crap then all that added 'wow factor' is meaningless.

For all the whining & complaining about the new V6 turbo's, The quieter sounds & the finger noses a year ago I thought the actual racing in 2014 was great, Some of the best for a few seasons & even though Mercedes dominated they at least provided us with a genuinely interesting & exciting title fight which went down to the final race.

I'd much rather more seasons like 2014 with 'quiet' engine's & ugly noses than seasons with tons of 'spectacle' & 'wow factor' where the racing is garbage.

Yeah the racing was the best its been for years. Mercedes did win 16 races but the racing itself was excellent, all throughout the year.

they should limit downforce only for straights and leave the cornering as a challenge

that's how good overtaking happens, you are holding a faster car until pressure leads to an error, just like Carlos Reuteman in Jarama
