With all of the recent talk of closed cockpits after the last few accidents. Aerodine Composites, which makes the NHRA canopies is open to working with IndyCar on testing a canopy for the Dallara DW12 chassis or on the next new IndyCar chassis. Aerodine is already licensed to do chassis repair work for Dallara chassis.

How good of a plan is it to stay in Chicago and drive to the Indy 500 on race day?

probably not. Indy can be quite heavily congested on race day and the race starts at noon, so that would have to be a very early morning. I stayed in the city and took a cab to the track, that worked great. Avoid using your own car, taxis got their own files and parking is almost as expensive.

'quite heavily congested' is quite the understatement. Make sure you'll get a day or two early - it's fun seeing all the drunk people :p One big campsite.

I think you're better off sourcing a hotel near Indianapolis and take a cab ride to the track.

I stayed in Louisville the night before the F1 race in 2007 and drove the remaining 100 miles or so the next morning. Left Louisville at 8 am and just barely got to my seat by lights out at 1 pm. Of course, it was because I was using Mapquest printed directions at the time and they were rendered useless by the cops directing traffic in and around the city and pretty much having to find the track on my own. But traffic WAS backed up all the way from the speedway to I-465 that day and I can only imagine the 500 is much worse.

do no even attempt to drive from Indy to the track - walking is faster, or the aforementioned taxi service

I woke up at 6:45 AM on Race Day morning this May and suffered a minor panic attack because I thought I had missed the ride there.

Traffic is monumentally backed up around 7:00 to 8:00 AM. Find a place there the night before. Do not take your chances unless you want to leave for the track around midnight.

Two years ago we got up at 4, left greenwood at 5, were near the track between 5:30 and 6 aaaaaaaand: There was a noteworthy traffic jam already.

Plus: Its an awsome feeling to see the sun rise over the backstreatch on raceday morning.

A motorsports writer buddy of mine left Mobile Alabama and drove all the way to Indy and got to the track during driver intros.
