We all have had our laugh at Pastor Maldonado's expense, but this picture of him carrying the coffin made the reality really sink in for me. Jules is passed away.

He looks beside himself in all of the pictures. It really is jarring to be reminded of their humanity in this way, especially as we elevate some of them to almost above-human status at the weekends.

As an aside, it is lovely to see the care they took in preparing everything - note that his helmet has what looks like a new set of tear-offs applied. It's a nice touch.

Actually Maldonado is a really nice guy. He stopped spontaneously when I asked him for his autograph. Others didnt.

When he puts on the helmet, it is a different story though, lol

and he carried his borther after that fire incident in Barcelona, right after his win

he just gets a bit loose inside the car for looking too much at the steering wheel

FTFY. If this 254G had been the cockpit recording, some miraculous circumstances may have allowed the impact to spread across the whole body and survive (in similar fashion to Kenny Brack in 2003). Sadly, it was all directly applied on the helmet.

The same article was on Autosport.com earlier, it contained a lot more detail and interviews with an FIA source. It seems to have been taken down now. The article was sad to read but also contained some extremely anger inducing statements, including the FIA person saying something along the lines that Jules' accident was unusual and nothing could have been done to foresee or prevent the accident occurring.

What 'effing bullshit.

going back to that day, I remember watching on the BBC, and the commentary team were really late to identify what was happening.
Was it similar on Sky and other channels?

I honestly thought something had happened to Sutil. Why I can't tell, but maybe that he was struck by the crane is what I thought.

Then there came the message of Jules having gone off at T18 wasn't it? I thought simply retired.

It was only when browsing through the race thread here that I came to know it (a few minutes before the BBC crew).

What a nightmare that was... with the skies so dark (also due to the sun setting obviously), it seemed to fortell something horrible at hand.

Also, what was up with the helicopter? They say it was better to transport Jules by ambulance due to the pressure. But maybe this too was BS and in fact again showing the negligence the FIA showed that day.

The FIA were extremely negligent, yet their own report admonished themselves of any wrongdoing or responsibility in not only the circumstances leading up to Jules' accident but also his recovery and transportation period through to hospital. Instead the FIA placed the blame firmly in Jules' hands as well as Manor's own systems. To say I'm angered by FIA retiring #17 is an understatement. It isn't a tribute or respectful. It is an insult to Jules and his family from a group of self-centered, selfish and self-gratifying people.

If I'm not mistaken, the weather at the hospital was so foggy/rainy that helicopter could not have landed there. It took additional 20-40 minutes to get Jules to the hospital with an ambulance. I don't know if it made any difference in the end, 254G deceleration to head (apparently measured by the ear piece?) is a grave injury, it's around the same level than what Dan Wheldon suffered, if I remember correctly.

The one thing that could have made the difference was to call the safety car immediately after Sutil's off. But the FIA wanted to push the envelope and avoid embarrassment from finishing under SC/Red flag due the darkness. Unfortunately we witnessed the worst kind of darkness due that decission.

The Spanish commentary team didn't know what was happening too. I remember they got confused and until pictures from Marussia garage and red flag were shown, they were in other things.

Immediately after accident no-one knew the forces involved or the potential outcome of Jules' condition, and even with the weather conditions as they were on the day the FIA failed to observe and follow their own protocols when it came to the emergency evacuation and transportation to hospital. Time is critical with patient well being and potential recovery (or opposite...) in emergency situations and FIA policies clearly outline what to do and times involved in situations that we saw involving Jules. Except the FIA didn't follow it's own policies and allowed a time lag that could have been critical to Jules' survival or potential recovery. But the FIA has washed their hands clean. It was Jules' fault. End of story. Fucking cowards and hypocrites.

Using the helicopter was not a consideration due to the head injury.

There is always a protocol in place.
