I saw a Red Farmer interview where he hit the nail on the head about how the cars drove. In great detail, he explained how hitting the brakes would have actually made the car swerve to the right, and how the tires and everything on the car is made to make it turn left when they nail the throttle.

You're right though, Chris - it's the investigators and what Tony is telling them that will truly tell the tale.

Also, Richard Petty killed an 8 year old boy in a 1965 drag racing incident. It was hard on him, and he thought about the boy and his family a lot, but he did manage to win a few titles after that. Most drivers have a way of blocking those memories out, be it a bad wreck, personal issues, whatever.

And to this day Petty won't talk about that incident.

Something tells me Smoke won't have that luxury in this day and age. He'll undoubtedly race again, but he'll probably be dodging questions about it for years.

You can dodge questions all you want. Nobody can make you talk about something.

Were there ever any reports on Ricky Rudd and how he was handling things after hitting Mike Rich on pit road in 1990? He definitely came back and and had his best season the following year so it can be done.

but even in those situations it was cut and clear that those were pure accidents. with the media and everything making tony out to be this horrible person who "possibly did this on purpose", its very different from those 2 situations unfortunately.

I saw someone (on FB I think) comment on standing on lap 13 and 14, 13 for Ward, 14 for Stewart. I thought that'd be more appropriate.
And they chose Bristol - the perfect track for a fanstand demonstration on two sequential laps with 16 second lap times and 360' grandstands. Image

How about Tony gets back into the car and donates his personal winnings after every race to Ward's family?

The lawyers will say no, as by doing that he'd be admitting some sort of responsibility, he's doing the best thing he can, keeping his head down while the criminal investigation is carried out, once that's done he can come back to racing, the civil side is just that, civil, and will be played out in private mostly, unlike the media led criminal investigation.

^^exactly. The lawsuit will happen but Tony will most likely settle out of court so it's not drawn out.

I was around in 1990 when Ribbs ran over a marshal (another incident which really was a pure accident), which is somewhat comparable. I certainly don't remember a vulture media back then instantly proclaiming Ribbs to be guilty of murder. Media was more selective back then, racing was not in the forefront so it didn't get tabloid-ized, and "personality" didn't drive stories so much.

To be honest, most of the people I've talked to who are not really race fans, and who have seen the video, wondered why the hell Ward ran out on the track, and really can't fault Tony for much. In many ways, it's a good thing that video *did* leak out, elsewise *that* sort of classy race fan (we know the type, the type Andre referred to) would be dominating the discussion ala the idiotic tweets and posts we saw at the beginning of this thread.

NSSN had a small blurb about Rich's widow suing NASCAR, Hendrick, Rudd and I think Atlanta Motor Speedway for $5 million or something to that effect. I don't know how that turned out.
