I hope this incident helps change one aspect in motorsport in America, where it's endemic and almost unique to it:

Drivers should NEVER get out of their cars and walk down a live race track to shout and wave their finger at the driver that punted them out. It's never a good idea and this kind of accident was bound to happen sooner or later. It just happened to involve a big name in motorsports.

Long story short, I hope that drivers now think twice or thrice before coming out of their cars after being taken out. Fight in the paddock or whatever, not on the live track.

As harsh as it, the guy contributed to his own death, and the blame shoud fairly and squarely fall at the feet of the organisers and NASCAR in general for perpetuating and letting such behaviour take place. I mean come on, what do you expect could happen by walking out into the middle of a live race track all by yourself to show displeasure to a driver? All it takes is a mechanical error, or a driver blindsided by another car to have such an incident.

If I were the organisers, I would boot a driver out for an extended period of time for doing something like that.

Heat of the moment, you get angry and remonstrate. Consequences are far from your mind.

Sounds like NASCAR is OK with the incident and Tony is clear to race today....wonder how much money that cost? Still have a dead 20 year old, hope the parents sue this shit out of him...

To me the only one to blame is the victim. He ran onto the racing line, almost gets hit and then runs even further onto the racing line in a black racing suit on a poorly lit track. What was he expecting that would happen?

Of course, we shouldn't speak bad of the one who died, but we can't ignore that what he did was completely stupid.

Like this is the first time a driver has gotten pissed, gotten out of the car, and yelled at someone for causing a wreck. :slaphead:

The way he walked towards the racing line in the dark certainly didn't help the situation. Heat of the moment? Certainly. Stupid? Yep

Absolutely not IMO. Yes there are still questions to be answered, but an article by one of Stewart's friends is about as irrelevant as it gets.

there have been HUNDREDS of driver retaliations over time, but this with Tony is on another level.

Am I the only one who can clearly hear Stewart accelerate in the video? That would imply that he saw Ward well beforehand.

He did accelerate. It's also one of the few very early details people were reporting that turned out to be fully accurate.

Yeah, he definitely hit the gas with the intent to scare the kid, probably wanted to mud him and missed. It's an ignorant move to make in a race car, and Tony as the most professional driver I'm sure there that night should not have been setting examples of dangerous shit to do like that under caution, whether Kevin was hit or not.

Fact: If the kid had stayed in his car until the safety crew had arrived, like he was supposed to do, he would still be alive today.

Hope that something to come from this tragedy could be the banning of driver's prancing around on a live track trying to remonstrate with drivers they feel have done them wrong. Do that in any other country in the world and you'll probably be hit with a ban, yet in NASCAR it's seemingly encouraged (for instance Yeley wandering out to point at Bayne in the Nationwide race yesterday) to add to the "show" to give the moron rednecks something to holler about.

For those that are arguing that his dark suit had something to do with it:
Would you have a problem seeing?

Wonder what changed his mind? Just the fact that probably every media outlet in the country will be descending upon WGI today to try to get at him for comment? NASCAR kindly suggesting to Tony to quietly get out of Watkins Glen to keep all unwanted said media attention away? I have a feeling that he didn't step out just because he is bothered by what happened and that's sad.

Apparently members of his team got him to change his mind.

If Tony had been driving at a sensible speed like every single other driver out there (the ones that aren't hugely paid professionals), the kid would still be alive today.

He made a mistake in the heat of the moment. A moment that only cost him his life because of the actions of another. From the video jsalvador posted, I don't think visibility would have been an issue.

Canadaigua is not poorly lit by any stretch. People who have never seen a dirt short track race in person or have never seen winged sprints need to stop bashing about the lighting or the dark firesuit since they're posting with no idea what they're talking about. Further, this entire situation has nothing to do with NASCAR at all. Tony is a NASCAR driver, and NASCAR, I think, does need to do something, but this was an ESS 360 Sprint Car race. Absolutely ZERO to do with NASCAR in and of itself.
