What happened to Massa? He was fast in the first two sessions than it looked like he stepped on his dick in Q3.

Obviously Red Bull continue to give him the worst car. Scandalous.

2 seasons with only 2 or 3 wins, but no championship chances, I guess that's fair enough

GP2 car => same weight as 2014 F1, no DRS and 500HP versus F1's max power of 800HP

These kinds of comments are so massively misguided...

F1 - brand new rules set which gave teams little time for R&D prior to it's launch for 2014 and with 11 individually designed and built chassis, where each team has only 2-3 drivers feeding into car performance and development.

GP2 - 20'ish identical cars provided by a single constructor developed over a 3'ish year period with feedback for R&D from 10+ teams and 30-40+ drivers.

The thing is Kals, those comments are not misguided. I would accept and understand GP2 being faster than some of the F1 backmarkers if we have some Fundmetals and Life F1's on the grid, but we don't. When 13 of the second division cars are faster than 4 of the first tier cars, which to be honest are not massively slow and embarrassing, you know that there is some sort of problem with the top tier. In this case it seems to be the Pirelli rubber (though I read somewhere that GP2 have the same spec tyre? which if true just highlights F1's problems even more).

It should not matter that GP2 has more research and driver input than F1 backmarkers, because they should have a fundamentally slower set of regs and cars no matter what developments they throw at the cars, short of putting rocket boosters on! The only way they should be faster is if there is an absolute pig of a car on the F1 grid, and to be frank, there is not (though the Caterham looks like one)

It is a bit disconcerning when the fastest GP2 runner could be sitting 17th on the grid.

Maybe this will be an outlier in the season, in which case we can put it down to a one off and forget about it, though I think we will be hearing more about during the season.

The new regs are infinitely more complicated than those of gp2 though and getting on top of them is going to be a long and hard process for the teams with the smaller budgets and lesser engineering talent. The technical direction of the sport is also important and has to be taken into consideration when considering the ongoing difficulties of these new cars.

Webbsy, those comments are greatly misguided. Throughout the history of motorsports certain junior series runners have been quicker than the next series up. F1 and F3000 / GP2 is no different. Same for MotoGP / 500cc with Moto2 / 250cc racing.

Then consider that the current spec of F1 cars are at the very start of their development cycle versus a spec series 3+ years into it's development.

Not when such a large number of the lower tier are faster than quite a few of the top tier.

Granted there has always been a few outstanding efforts by lower tier drivers that would have placed them amongst the upper formulas, but almost half of the feild? Like I said maybe this is an outlier, and I sincerley hope it is, but if we still have this situation in 3 months time, then yes there is a fundamental problem, even discounting for the development phase.

F1 should be the pinnacle of motorsport. If you have only 11-12 teams on the grid, given the hundreds of millions they are spending in devolopment, designing the cars, given the fact that there is 'concurrence' between engine makers, all teams should easily be a lot faster around the track than any lower series.

It also means that the real big top teams are only a tiny bit faster than these GP2 teams.

if you have like 18-20 teams on the grid like we had in the late 80s, early 90s, then I can understand that it can happen.

Wtf does it matter whether the entire field is quicker or slower than GP2?

Can't people understand you can't just plug and drive with such new technologies?

Sigh.

If we lose a few F1 teams they can merge with gp2. Just like endurance races with different classes on track at the same time, they're so close on times it could work.

I can't.

when Renault introduced the turbos back in 1977 they were very unreliable, but they were pretty fast. When Lotus introduced the wing cars, the were not slower than F2, or when Williams had like an-all-computer-Williams in 1992. When Ferrari introduced the semi automatic gearbox they had incredibly many DNF, but did win the first race.

I mean, it's not because it is new technologies they should be slower than a series only the die-hard motorsport fan has heard of?

It's just because of the over regulation of the sport that makes these cars the way the are. (number of engines, number of gearboxes, rev limiter, hardly any testing, one tyre supplier).

And those regulations are the reason the sport still exists. Without them costs would soar and it's hard enough for teams to find strong sponsorship as it is. Having a tight set of regs moving into a new era of the sport is important, it gives teams some direction with their development and keeps the costs of that development a lot lower than if they were given free reign. In Q2 we had 3rd to 17th within 6 tenths at 5 races into a completely new set of regulations and to me that's mighty impressive and a pat on the back to what the governing body has created for this season and the direction they chose to go. Sure merc are quite far ahead but through history that has generally been the case with a team. I can't imagine we would have anywhere near the same reliability and compactness of the grid had they left the regulations more open and I fail to see how that would be preferable in any way to what we have currently. It is what it is, it's exciting new tech and they still have a lot of improvement to make which will come with time.
