but 4 seconds faster... that's like 10 lightyears in comparison

That's a fair point aerogi, but there's two things I don't understand with this...

1) Why would they try this ploy 1/4 way into the season? The true pace of the car was seen this past weekend and this is typically a strategy pre-season.
2) Where was this pace this past weekend?

He probably just skipped that final chicane and used the old layout to set that time, only logical explanation I can think of.

Well if that was the case then the time wouldn't have counted.

Maybe this is whats needed. Give the lower team softer tyres to use (like in MotoGP)

that would be a good rule change, weaker teams with softer tires at least in Q1

Or perhaps F1 could just give the lower teams more of the TV revenue and prize money and they will then be able to build a better car?

I guess you meant under weight?

Fuel load was already the lowest at qualifying

I don't know if they did it with SS either, but they used Mediums on qualifying and the gap from Mediums to SS is around 2s only and probably even less in a track like Barcelona

Just saw on phil1993 article that indeed it was on SS

I guess the other 2s came from a combination of other things like: using DRS everywhere, using a more agressive qualifying setup and I also read on phil's article that the temperatures were never higher than mid teens, so that much lower temps also increased downforce quite a bit and that counts a lot on a track like Barcelona

I wonder what tyres the other cars used, though.

It could indeed be a combination of a bit of everything...

but still, 4 whole seconds... If the Merc's would do the same, how blimingly fast would they be then?

But Ferrari can barely deliver a good car with the money they get now, imagine the drama when they get even less :8:

Um if that pic of the Merc is real, please please don't run it. These cars are ugly enough as they are. I think the looks of the car are more of an issue than the noise.

Oh dear God. I just saw a photo of it on F1 live. Its even worse than I'd imagined. Won't some one think of the children!

This video is quite useless since he unfortunately stopped recording before another car without the vuvuzela exhaust came along... I'd love to hear it in comparison
