pretty sad that picture, when you think of how short the drivers had to live at that stage.

My God how good it must feel, when your wheel is at the curb, the car perfectly balanced in a slide...

I envy these men, dead or alive. They touched something most of us can only imagine (or extrapolate from driving much slower cars, much more slowly even when "racing" :p )

Oh yeah!

it's amazing how the spectators (apart from two look-a-likes) are wathing the upcoming field or so instead of looking at this beautiful slide...

Never turn your back to the oncoming cars.

Also that sort of cornering was pretty standard in those days, so if there was a close battle behind, as much as we'd revel in the spectacularness now, they're going to ignore it in favour of some close racing because it's as normal to them as a car perfectly hitting the apex now.

Thread saved, thanks everyone!

Also, Gilles Villeneuve comes up in half the photos, quite predictable

Nothing beats Fangio in his Lancia Ferrari.

That Lancia must have been inspirational to the early 1996 F310 :p

Whaaaaaat ?!?!? http://www.newsonf1.com/2004/races/italy/qres.htm#p1

but thanks, I didn't look down the page previously. I so much hate these qualifying formats where pole position is not the fastest time, but that's digressing from the thread topic...

I think we all agree that car handling was much more spetacular and tougher in those days. Imho, challenged the drivers quite a lot more and this is something I really miss in recent F1.

I always liked that version of the 96 Ferrari.

It was the later season version I didn't like:

The high nose never worked, imo

The side pods were weird and the cockpit sides a bit too high but it was fine until they went with the high nose. That was fucking hideous :yuk:
