The details on the coma seem sketchy. BBC reported this, which has me concerned: "The 44-year-old German "was suffering a serious brain trauma with coma on his arrival" the hospital in the south-east city of Grenoble said in a statement."

This is pure speculation, but he was first taken to Moutiers, so they might have induced him there.

That's true and that does seem like a likely procedure for them to do to minimize any further risks of trauma.

I never trust news during the onset of events, but heres what BBC is saying as of now:

'Schumacher was wearing a helmet when he fell and hit his head against a rock, Meribel resort director Christophe Gernignon-Lecomte said earlier.
Early reports had said his condition was not life-threatening.
Mr Gernignon-Lecomte said Schumacher was conscious when he was attended to by two ski patrollers who requested helicopter evacuation to the nearby valley town of Moutiers.
He was subsequently moved to the bigger facility at Grenoble'

This is very concerning. MSC is my favorite driver of all time, lets hope and pray for the best.

Ross Brawn has supposedly arrived to visit Schumacher - Olivier Panis went earlier but was unable to see him.

Massa was also put on induced coma after his crash. It's probably the best way to deal with this sort fo situation.

I'm assuming Michael was anesthetised & intubated for the transfer to Grenoble. Heli is too small to do much, so this usually done preflight

I read on RMC's website that a press conference will be held Monday morning at 11 am at Grenoble University Hospital to discuss his health. I'm not quite sure what to make of that at this point.

Press release from the Grenoble hospital
Quote:

Google translate:
Quote:
Mr. Schumacher was admitted to hospital in Grenoble at 12:40 pm, following a skiing accident occurred in Méribel in the late morning. He suffered a severe head injury with coma on arrival, which required neurosurgical intervention immediately. He remains in a critical situation.

It clearly says that he was already in coma when he arrived at the hospital, no mention of it being induced.

I would *guess* that it means they'll observe his condition tonight but they just set a time tomorrow in order to prevent the media hysteria. Perhaps they think that he is over the worst and likely to improve - but I stress this is just my speculation.

Edited: Sky News had a neurosurgeon, I'm paraphrasing: Coma means there is a range of things that could have happened: brain swelling, brain haemorrage, a blood clot within the brain or on the surface would need to be removed. There might need to have been an intercranial pressure monitor or sometimes a large piece of the skull is removed to allow the brain to swell to minimise the pressure on vital structures. Suspects that he had a lucid interval which suggests it is not as serious as it could have been - those who are immediately unconscious fare far worse - but this is still serious. Any potential swelling needs to be treated. Helmet can often minimise the severity of the injury which is sustained. For more, Hartstein's Twitter account is very informative.

Martin Brundle on twitter : "Come on Michael, give us one of those race stints at pure qualifying pace to win through, like you used to. You can do it."

Getting the same news here, critical condition but non life-threatening, whatever that means. I hope he pulls through without long-term effects. Thoughts with his son, must be tough for him.

I heard on TV (so probably copying some other source) that he was concious after the crash. Wouldn't be surprised if he fell into a coma once the adrenaline passed.

So was shocked when just a minute ago it's headline news, and he's in a coma! I do hope that he pulls through this.

Ditto that. Guess I'm not going to have an early night after all, unless some good news surfaces fairly soon :(

I still believe he'll survive, but when a racing driver gets in serious threat I usualy get too much optimistic

yes he is in a coma, but a drug induced coma, so his brain can rest and repair itself.. lets not get into jumping to conclusions and whipping up a frenzy quite yet.. lets wait for concrete news

My best wishes for Michael & His Family for a speedy recovery.. This is why you need to really be careful on the slopes.. I think its is a safe bet to just stay off the slopes/motorbikes and keep to four wheels.
