History:
Hungary first hosted a grand prix in the 1930s, but following the Second World War and the building of the Iron Curtain it was not until the 1960s that motorsport began to find a place in the country.

At the start of the 1980s there was a general wish for a Grand Prix to be held behind the Iron Curtain and negotiations took place with the Soviet Union with a view to a race being held in Moscow. In the summer of 1983 however, the attention of the Formula One decision makers turned away from Moscow and towards Budapest in Hungary, whose national sporting authority was keen to put the country back on the map of global motorsport.

At first a street race through Budapest was suggested, but in the end the decision was taken to build a brand new circuit in a valley 19 kilometres outside Budapest. The valley provided natural vantage points for spectators and in 1985 work began on the Hungaroring. The track opened in 1986 and it held its first Formula One event in August that year. It was a huge success and almost 200,000 fans showed up.

Although tight and twisty, the circuit has been known to throw up some great races, the most memorable being Thierry Boutsen's win in 1990, beating Ayrton Senna by 0.3 seconds, and of course the 1997 race where Damon Hill in the Arrows sensationally passed Michael Schumacher's Ferrari only to be denied the win by mechanical failure on the very last lap.

I sure dislike Hungaroring's tarmac runoff areas. I don't get it why even the most slowest and safest corners need that boring asphalt. Hopefully they leave Red Bull Ring untouched.
Also I see more static cameras installed in the pit lane.

Hopefully, but I think half of the turns at RBRing already have runoff?

Still find it hard to believe we're at Hungary and Williams haven't scored a point yet.

and McLaren no podium.

Can't think of the last season when McLaren didn't score a podium finish. I'm thinking 1995 or 1996.

Edit: Neither of those, it was actually 1980

And of course: as soon as someone has a bigger off (like Vergne just throwing it away at turn 4) instead of running an inch wide it is poorly covered by FOM.

Is there any gravel left around the circuit at all? There was only about 1 or 2 corners left last year.

It used to be a twisty challenge. Now it just looks dire.

The chiance at turn 6/7 still has some gravel.

they should put 'glue' on those tarmac run off areas. It would even be 'safer' as the car would be halted faster, and it would be no advantage or at least you will be punished somehow a little bit when going too wide.

The only thing that look like stopping another Red Bull romp is tyre wear.

(except a tongue-in-cheek explanation: local corrupt entrepreneurs or money laundering with the track management's complicity, under the excuse of safety)

I suggest landmines that detect whether the wheels are locked (real accident) or just someone casually rolling through.

Hungaboring

Yeah I really think this race is gonna suck...

Unless there's a hiccup in qualifying or a first turn incident that spins a few front runners around but doesn't knock them out of the race completely, then we could be heading for our most boring race of the season with Vettel dominating and everyone line astern behind...

Saying this on page one for easy quoting later. If I'm wrong, hell good, we'll have seen an exciting race, quote me double

Generally this is a circuit that red bull do well at, so I don't expect anything great. But anyone going into the Hungarian GP expecting action is an idiot so I'll just treat it as a day of watching F1, rather than hoping for a good race. Executions low, can't be disappointed.

There's a hell of a lot of difference between "great track to race" and "entertaining track to watch..."

Which is why we usually hate Tilke tbh, his tracks philosophy usually leans towards impressing the drivers with some multi apexed or off camber corners to give them a challenge, then just thinks "ulp...they have to pass at some point, better chuck in a 3 mile long straight for that!"

I'm just a fan, I don't really have any frustrated racing driver desires, so that's why tracks like Austria are much more preferable to me. They may just be a collection of straights and right angle corners (ones I could NEVER get right on racing games either ) but they put on a hell of a lot of good races across all championships.

Then you get something like Spa which is the best of both worlds....

Hungary serves a purpose in that the tight little (Hungaro...)Bull Ring of a track is a completely different driving and engineering challenge than somewhere like Spa or Monza, but that's about as interesting as it gets.
