Has the Daytona 500 Qualifying format been discussed here yet?

Quote:
The qualifying procedure for the Daytona 500 is as follows:

The front row, positions 1-2, will go to the two fastest drivers during qualifying on Feb. 17.
Positions 3-32 will be set by the finishing order in Budweiser Duel qualifying races on Feb. 21. Drivers who finish in the top 15 in their respective races earn spots in the Daytona 500 and the 16th-place driver gets in as long as one of the top-15 drivers already occupies one of the two front row spots.
Positions 33-36 will go to the drivers who didn’t make it through the qualifying races but posted the fastest four speeds during qualifying.
Positions 37-42 will be awarded as provisional based off of 2012 owner points
Position 43 will be a past champion’s provisional, going to the most recent past champion not already in the field. If there is no past champion, then the spot will be filled by the next driver eligible based on 2012 owner points.

This is so much better than what it has been the last few years. It will actually make the Twin 150's better to watch in my opinion.

It's like it used to be. Only difference is there's no limit to provisionals like their used to be.

Why don't they just do 1 30 lap segment and call it a day? Just do a random draw for positions, no gimmicks.

Replace 30 laps with 20 laps and you'd have the Clash from years gone by. Which was just fine, provided good, exciting racing because there wasn't time to jack around. Drop the green, go for broke. Not pit stops, no strategy, no bullshit.

Of course, NASCAR decided long ago that wasn't good enough and fiddled with the rules to the point that no one gives a damn.

I know I bitch about the good ole days a lot and how the old way of doing things was better, but you know, sometimes it really was better back then.

I definitely wouldn't pay as much money as they would want for a 20 lap race, nor would I drive the 3 hours across the state to watch a 20 lap race. So I don't think going back to that format would work if they were looking to keep the profits they are getting now.

Aren't the formats determined by the race sponsor and not NASCAR? Like wasn't Anheuser Busch that turned the Busch Clash into the Bud Shootout and also changed the format? Same deal Winston and Sprint had done with the All Star race.

So if there is a huge crash and 7 drivers are left going into the final segment... Let's say the fans voted to eliminate 6 drivers, then what? 1 car runs the remaining laps and wins? Or even 2-3 cars? WTF

I picture something along the lines of the last race in Talladega Nights, but with less kissing at the end.(thank god)

They should run it to the old "black flag" race rules that Webby devised in the 70's for an exhibition race at Brands, the field would run say 10 laps, then the organisers would start black flagging the last car on track at the end of each lap, until you got down to a realistic figure to have a 5 lap shootout with.

Sounds like the Australian Pursuit races ARCA ran over here in the 60s, if I remember right. May have to check with my friend on that one.

Sprint Announced some changes to the Sprint Unlimited. The fans can now vote on the starting lineup. They can vote to line the cars up based on: practice speeds, car number, or 2012 Owners Points.

That's now been changed. The options are now 2012 Owner Points, career wins or the pole speed that got them in the Shootout. Wouldn't mind seeing the last option and having Ambrose start on pole tbh...

Fuck it, they should just determine the starting lineup with an over-the-top battle royale. Last man standing gets the pole.

Since he already did that last year, he'll have to ramp it up this year. I say he'll pull a "Stroker Ace" and win the race sliding on his roof.

I don't care who it is in what race or what series it happens in. I want to see this happen at least once in my life before I die.

Waiting about 2 weeks for the post-race replays to work out what actually happened....those were the days!

That 2005 speedweeks was crazy, I think nearly every race had a flip (All but the Busch race IIRC ) and there was at least 2 more races than we get nowadays too (Goody's Dash and IROC ....)

GOOD TIMES!

Looked back on Motors TV's season review too, in last year's NW race Kurt Busch caused 2 of the 3 medium-sized ones.
First by pushing through the middle and making people lose control in avoidance then with a stupid high block when people had a run on him.
I dunno how that guy sleeps at night.
