Am I the only one that thinks Perez hasn't been as bad as everyone has made out? Yes there have been times where he hasn't been as good as he should have been, but he has also had his fair share of bad luck. I think McLaren are using the excuse of this years piece of crap to warrant getting rid of him. You don't go from looking like one of the bright young stars to utter rubbish in one year.

He hasn't been as bad as some are making out, and in my mind one of the best moves of this season was the one he put on Button in Monaco.

But the issue is that in my eyes, Perez is not good enough to win the championship for McLaren. If they deliver a rocket ship - a bit like Button had at the start of 2009 - then he's good enough to do it. He is a driver similar to Button and he's still rough around the edges. The problem is that over the course of a 20 race season, up against a Vettel/Red Bull, Alonso/Ferrari or Hamilton-Rosberg/Mercedes combination, he will not win the title if it's a competitive year.

As RtN has said many times, Perez's main asset is tyre management. In pure pace, he's a little slower than Button, who in turn was regularly trumped by Hamilton. With a competitive car, Perez could easily get 150 or so points in a season, maybe a little more. The problem is to beat the others he'll need to get around 260-280, and I can't see him doing that.

Sorry but I think we're making assumptions here. There have been quite a few races in 2013 where there has been high tyre-deg and Perez hasn't had the advantage that people believe is his strength.

It is possible that Perez may not be on the same level as Vettel, Hamilton or Alonso, but quite frankly it is actually too early to tell whether he can or will challenge for a title. What it is definitely too early to do, is to write him off like some are doing. For example, see Grosjean circa end of 2012.

The difference is that Grosjean has always had speed throughout his career. It was just a case of harnessing said speed.

I think Perez could be a very good #2 and good enough to win races. Easily as good as the likes of Fisichella, Heidfeld etc. But for me, he's not championship material.

I think part of the problem is that because of the high calibre of the current top drivers, a good driver is made out to be very average.

Perez deserves another year in a good car to see what he can really do, but ideally he needs to tone down the arrogance a little.

Perez has had speed throughout his career as well you know.

Sergio may not have won a title since the British F3 National / B class triumph in 2007, but he did challenge for honours in British F3 (2008) and GP2 (2010), winning multiple races in both categories. It was his performances in British F3 during 2008 that made people sit up and notice him. Driving for the single car T-Sport team using an unfancied Mugen-Honda engine, against the might of the multi-car (4 cars) heavily Red Bull funded Carlin operation (running Alguesuari and Hartley) using the Mercedes powerplant.

There's more to Sergio than you think.

Piquet, Prost, Mansell and Senna

Hamilton, Alonso, Button and Vettel

Peres and Berger

I quite like that.

I just wish for another competitive season next year.

On this day 20 years ago, Ayrton Senna scored his 41st and final Grand Prix win at the Australian Grand Prix.

Rumor: Raikkonen and Hulkenberg may swap seats for the final two races.

Quote:
The big question ahead of next weekend’s United States Grand Prix in Austin is the whereabouts of Kimi Raikkonen, according to former Formula 1 driver turned pundit Mika Salo. Lotus claimed after Abu Dhabi that its pay dispute with Finn Raikkonen is now over, and that he will contentedly drive the black and gold car in Texas and Brazil before switching to Ferrari for 2014. Salo is not so sure and told the broadcaster MTV3, ”Let’s see if Kimi is in Austin and in what car.” “It’s probably the most anticipated thing about the whole American Grand Prix weekend. There have been reports Kimi will drive a Sauber instead of a Lotus,” said fellow Finn Salo.

The Raikkonen-to-Sauber report is new, but it would seem to tie in with reports Nico Hulkenberg, the Swiss team’s current driver, is Lotus’ preferred option to replace Raikkonen in 2014. Sauber, meanwhile, is powered by engines supplied by Raikkonen’s new employer, Ferrari. “For now it’s just a report,” Salo admitted. ”Kimi loves to drive, but the atmosphere at Lotus is no longer good for him. Sauber is also short of money and has not paid for Nico Hulkenberg.”

What is the sense of driving a Ferrari powered engine they aren't going to use next year. I don't see the benefit for Kimi. Maybe Hulkenberg, but I think he's better off in his last 2 races with Sauber. He's going to adapt to the new car for just 2 races, I think he can get more points with the Sauber in the last 2 races than in a Lotus.

Did we actually have any driver changes this season? If not, this would be the first time in a while that the same guys starting the season, ended it as well without being replaced even once.

2008 was the last season I believe. Super Aguri folded early on, so 2 drivers were lost but none actually changed teams or lost drives.

Heidfeld replaced Kubica in 2011, and was later replaced himself by Senna later on in the season.

So we didn't end the season with the same we started with so 2008 doesn't count in my book ;)

BBC is also reporting that McLaren might replace Perez for Magnussen.

although I am no fan of Perez (or as they call him "Checo"), Button is the one who should go if they are to replace one of the drivers.
