glad that he raises this point.

Hasn't this kind of already been said?

I certainly had an appreciation of the danger which to me was part of the pleasure of racing. To me now racing is – the dangers are taken away: if it's difficult, they put in a chicane. So really now the danger is minimal – which is good, because people aren't hurt. But for me the fact that I had danger on my shoulder made it much more exciting. It's rather like if you flirt with a girl, it's more exciting than paying for a prostitute, because while you know you're gonna get it, the other one you don't. And I think with driving a motor car, the danger is a very necessary ingredient. Like if you're cooking, you need salt. You can cook without salt, but it doesn't have the flavour. It's the same with motor racing without danger. For me.

It's quite ironic that it's Anthony Davidson who is voicing that opinion, even though it is true.

It's a very well documented effect. Some scientists believe everyone has a constant level of risk-taking: if the perceived risk decreases, the behaviour adjusts and becomes more risky so as to maintain the same level of danger as before.

Slightly unfair to use this situation as an example, no? That was not an accident caused by reckless driving.

It was a poor attempt at humour, that's all. While it is questionably reckless, it was a huge misjudgement on Ant's part.

Some of the cars with the old livery are insanely nice! I especially like the Brabham and McLaren!

I wonder if he thinks Allan Simonsen deserved to 'get punished' for his mistake this past June.

Nothing but a fucking idiot spouting more fucking idiocy.

I love retro liveries, would love to see some of those on the track again, for promotional purposes

McLaren could do something like that this year, as they're reaching 50 years

There's some difference in track safety whether you're going flat out on tarmac run-off or wether you're smashing your car through guard rail and in to a huge tree. And there's a lot between those two extremes.

Besides, Davidson didn't say that Le Mans is not dangerous, but F1 is not.

Line all the tracks with a 2 meter wide strip of actual grass or gravel, THEN put in tarmac run-offs. Problem solved. Racing get's better, higher chance of risking your race result, no higher chance of getting hurt. FFS.

There are plenty of plausible and workable 'solutions' to the 'problem' of excess tarmac run-off leading to supposedly reduced driving standards that don't even involve doing anything to the track.

The FIA has a set of sporting regulations for every series it controls and it mandates one for every series in the world. If you want to improve driving standards, then you make better use of the rulebook and the punishments contained therein.

You do not do something as stupid as bringing the barriers back towards the circuit.

They wouldn't even need to have gravel. They could just have the run-off be super-super adhesive and have it ruin the tyres.

Speaking of ruining the tyres.

Not possible due to the rules not allowing teams to switch mid season. Only big exception if all other teams agree.

I won't stop lobbying until this rule + the rule for having both cars in the same livery is dropped.

I'd accept a compromise where both cars have to run 50% in the same livery but are free to switch during the season. I'm sure some teams can rake up more money if they could offer potential sponsors to run in their colors for 1 or more races or having personal sponsors pay more to let their driver run in their colors.

Obviously this rule will have 1 exception. Ferrari must always be classic Ferrari red with black wings and gold wheels and running #27 and #28 if the current champion isn't in their team.

They don't want people joining the track back and putting gravel on the racing line. I believe this was one of the reasons they went all tarmac in the early 2ks.

It did start with high-speed corners because of the flips, and I completely agree with that, but when it started spreading to low-speed corners with slowish approaches (eg. the last chicane at Magny-Cours) this was the main - stupid - reason I read/heard.

One could argue that gravel (even a strip) is dangerous for bikers as it makes them tumble instead of simply sliding, but then the requirements for car and motorcycle safety are so different that you should question whether they should race at the same tracks altogether.
