Sad to hear this, considering I thought she had recovered from most of her injuries. She looked fairly in good health. :(

I always hate rumours but I'm going to post it anyway; there are reports that it was suicide. Don't know if it's true and I don't have a clue what they're based on, but it's something I've read.

Maybe it was self inflicted? Not to be that guy, but it has to be said.

A police spokesperson has said that they are assuming it was natural causes but can't confirm anything

Kevin Eason (Times) quotes Spanish authorities as saying it was heart failure.

This is extremely sad news considering how she and her family has been through recently after her testing accident.

Hope Marussia will have a some kind of a memorial or display during the weekend at Suzuka.

I don't think you need a GCSE in Spanish to work out what 'causas naturales' is.

Well....that's really shocking. Rest in Peace de Villota!

If confirmed natural causes, that's a display of how misterious the Universe can be. Looks like it was an "accident" that she survived July 2012, so she died a year later....in a non-violent way. But anyways, she was indeed a great character and left her lesson, specially to F1.

Im still under shock. She did so much for the sport, particularly women, and as of late, safety.

May she RIP.

quite surprising to see natural causes death on a 33 year old, but the crash also made several changes on her, she lost senses of taste and smell plus some changes on the brain who might led to organ failure

anyway I'm not a doctor and she may RIP

I was wondering whether - if it is heart failure - it was related to the accident. I know there's Sudden Adult Death Syndrome and other possibilities, but her injuries were so huge that it was a miracle she survived. If it's related to the accident, it could help medics understand in the future for people who suffer similar injuries. But for now that's all speculation...it's just shocking. Formula 1 is such a close knit community so I hope they commemorate her in some way.

Such a terrible and unexpected news.
I presume it has something to do with her accident, vascular damages or something, but it's pure speculation, and it wouldn't change anything.

Rest in Peace, Maria. :(

A year after almost losing her life in a gruesome racing accident, former Formula One test driver Maria de Villota was found dead in a hotel room in Seville, Spain, on Friday — with an autopsy showing that lingering injuries from her wreck likely caused her death. De Villota was 33.

De Villota's sister, Isabel, said an autopsy indicated that she had died in her sleep around 6 a.m. local time due to "neurological damage" from her crash in July 2012. De Villota lost an eye in the accident but had since seemingly recovered from the wreck — even driving again, writing a book about it, and recently getting married.

Her father, Emilio de Villota, a Formula One driver in the late 1970s and early '80s, and the rest of her family went to the coroner's office in Seville, where the autopsy was conducted.

The autopsy revealed De Villota died of cardiac arrest and all signs indicate the underlying cause was a detachment of brain mass stemming from the accident, Spanish newspaper ABC reported.

So sad that we all thought she was long ago out of danger from her injuries. :(
