Wel the first 3-4 cars go toward Eou rouge, but then its a big spray and you then see suddenly DC going into the wall causing a chain reaction.. did someone touch him or simply lost it at exit or dont know, im just guessing..

As digital TV had a higher camera angle at La Source that time you could clearly see that there was no touch or whatsoever between Coulthard and Irvine that resulted in DC losing it.

You're saying that Irvine caused the 1998 Spa incident? I know DC claimed that for many years but then he also stated on BBC during a post-race show (probably after Spa last year) that it was in fact his mistake and Irvine was totally innocent. I've never considered Irvine as a responsible party in that incident, I'm not sure how he can be.

I didn't say it, Irvine did. I always assumed DC was at fault and lost it over the drainage line on the transition that used to be 'run off' at La Source. But Eddie Irvine said on UK TV a number of years later that he was the cause of it, that DC went over his nose and he didn't move, which pitched him into a spin. I've never seen this so called higher camera angle, but I always assumed it was DC. But Irvine said he did it. Maybe Irvine was bullshitting to seem cool, "I caused the biggest crash in F1 history" or whatever, but he said it.

Google tells me it was Season 6, Episode 5 of TFI Friday that he guest starred on, which is where he said it. Chris Evans was the presenter. I think it was during Irvines Jaguar years, as IIRC they talked about that.

Went through my archive and made some screenshots that illustrate the situation:

There was slight contact but only at the apex of the corner

Image
You can see DC already pulling away from Irvine while accelarating out of the corner

Image
On the left of the '4' on top of the screen you can see the Mclaren steering into the concrete wall. There is a shade of Irvine's Ferrari underneath the Bridgestone banner

Now that I didn't know, thanks ellis. I'm going by what Coulthard claimed over the years, then what he admitted live on BBC sometime in the last couple of years "the reality is I just dropped a wheel onto the metal grille". The Irvine admission confuses matters somewhat.

Echti just proved that the Irvine admission was complete horseshit then. I guess I shouldn't be surprised - it is Eddie Irvine afterall. But yeah, he said in 2000 (checked the date that episode aired) that he was the cause of the accident.

Slight OT, but I got a notification on my phone that I got a reply here. That'll be getting turned off then. No offense to you guys, I love you n all but you're not making my phone beep all fecking day. :P

Either Irvine thinks he broke Coulthard's suspension (and the state DC's car ended up in, they'd likely never know for sure...) or just he thinks pushing him that wide onto the grille is his fault somehow...

Or he's boasting to show off and get some attention, which knowing Eddie is the more likely option...

Yeah, old La Source is so much better than no Belgian GP.

and Codename, yeah looks like Irvine BS attention seeking. Either that or DC's admission all these years later is correct.

always thought Coulthard was to blame, as he played decisive parts in key moments during the race

and how I miss those Spa years, with rain, cold and coloured tobacco sponsored cars

It was just a little non-serious remark to which I thought everyone could relate, but since we're apparently being really serious:

Yes. :) I never really wanted the GP back.

Butchering that part of the circuit has caused a gigantic financial pit just to get the Grand Prix back on the calendar, which in turn is causing even more losses every year.

Are we being serious? It all depends how you choose interpret a post and how personally you want to take throw away remarks, but there we go.

Anyway, it is either financial black hole or a circuit no longer frequented by F1. Which would you prefer? Same question for Melbourne, and a few other circuits. I'm sure Silverstone isn't that far behind either.

Interlagos needs and deserves better facilities than it has. I'd rather they not change turn 4, but it's a good upgrade overall.

I know a similar man with a moustache keen on golf who said the same thing after the last lap of Montreal 1991. Yet, when Williams retrieved the car and used the starter-motor, everything fired up without any problem.

In fact, how could anyone of sound mind think that wall would ever be a safety issue? There was no reason to build the massive run-off and the usueless works involved always puzzled me.

Or rather, there's a reason now. Increased opportunities to troll-penalise drivers for running wide during an overtake.

La Source was moved, it is further on from where it used to be. I guess it was moved so space could be increased in the new pit and paddock.

La Source isn't as good as it used to be, while the tarmac run-off reduces some of the spectacle but my only main gripe is what they did with Bus Stop. It's as if they sort of had two different sets of teams working on the new pit straight and realised 'oh shit, the circuit doesn't meet' and came up with an appalling chicane.

What you dislike about the new version, it is still a million times better than the previous resculptured Bus Stop chicane.

I guess so. I just find the second part of the chicane really clumsy, same with the pit entry.
