Over here the free underground newspaper is quite ok. They are kind of a "light" version of the more popular payed newspapers.

I don't know how it is where you live, but in Paris the free underground newspapers are the worst thing ever. They're not as bad/racist/vulgar as a tabloid, but they're just mediocre.
Mediocrity and superficial, stereotypical thinking between two advertisings is what they offer society, slowly killing it and bringing the general information level down.

It is a FREE newspaper. If you're expecting top quality journalism normally associated with the broadsheets, then you're miles off.

I think possibly the worst thing about the Bahrain situation is that it's been going on for three years now, and the only time it comes into the news is mid-April when it might be relevant to a motor race ... I'm not blaming Formula One for this, it's a common media problem where something is big news right up until the next big news story at which point it drops like a stone. The situation in Syria continues as ever before but as it's in no imminent state of revolution - just a long and bloody civil war, we're just kept simmering along with the story occasionally unless you decide to follow it on something like Al Jazeera or something even less mainstream. Bahrain is the same, and again there are sometimes snippets on Al Jazeera but apart from that it only crops up again when we have a motor race when F1 and other journalists massively care for a fortnight and then move on to the next race.

Rant over, I'm off to buy my morning paper ... (That's clearly a joke ... nobody buys newspapers any more, I'll get the free one they hand out on the underground.)

To play Devil's Advocate, I shall point out that the most organised opposition groups had reduced their activity in the months before the grand prix in order to try and surprise everyone on the weekend of the grand prix, meaning that there was nothing to report.

There is one Bahraini national on Atlas who is fairly certain that they are targeting the GP specifically this year, as general protests last year were largely ignored but the one thing that did get reported was the Force India firebombing.

Also some talk that Bernie, Zak Brown & Chris Pook want to Buy the Long Beach Gp contract & make it an F1 race again.

Could suggest that they're not that confident about New Jersey going ahead. Surely they wouldn't have 3 US races?

Regarding Bahrain, I don't want everyone to suddenly turn into Middle East specialists this weekend.

It's clear there's pockets of discontent, but no-one can be sure how much discontent there is. People last year were pleasantly surprised, but of course we don't know the detail. I read one F1 journalist who said most protests were peaceful, but ruined by teenagers that arrived at the end (nightfall) and started making trouble. Then there's the silent (majority? minority? Half of the populaton?) that are content with the current situation. Newspaper F1 journalists will turn into political journalists at their editors tell them to find the trouble (like Eason and Byron did last year) and present an obviously bias viewpoint. There's some trouble and because in the West people tend to be judgemental, it gets reflected over the whole area. There might be one explosion somewhere and TV networks et al blow the situation out of proportion for media purposes. We look at a car bomb in one city and think 'well that country isn't safe', yet you wouldn't look at the London riots in 2011 and think 'Well I'll avoid going to Dorset'. We have a small amount of knowledge that we allow to get filled in by what others want us to think. F1Zone's owner reported on the race in 2012 (and will be there this week) and he said there were few problems - some issues, but not a huge worry. That's one opinion of what one person has seen. If the media really gave a shit about Bahrain, we'd have heard about it all year round. Since last April, I've heard nothing.

There are troubles, that's obvious. But seeing as none of us (I think) are there, and I only know of one TBK member who's been to Bahrain, then it's very difficult for us to comment. There's trouble all over the world - think of the bombing in Boston yesterday, or the cases of sexual violence in India - the issue here is F1 being used as a political tool by BOTH sides of the spectrum. As bad as some think it is for F1 to seemingly support the pro-government race, then bowing down and cancelling the race would not be bowing down to respect the peaceful demonstrations, it would be because of the violent protestors. F1 has placed itself in an uncomfortable position. Comments from all sides have exacerbated the situation - of course Bernie will say everything's okay; of course articles like the one RtN posted will get published because the race is coming up, but I don't think anyone can get a full picture of what's going on - even those who will be in the country this weekend.

I know what you're trying to say Phil, but..

That's a completely stupid comparison to make. There's a bit of a difference between what happened in London and what happened in Bahrain.

Yeah, it wasn't the best comparison. But my main point was that people cloud their views sometimes with one event that happens.

Porsche worded the denial carefully. They said they would be using internal and external drivers. The currently have test drivers and webber is not part of those plans. All that confirms is webber will not be part of the test team.

'Mercedes have denied reports that Lewis Hamilton is to drive for them in 2013'.

It's about PR. No-one wants to announce a new driver by just confirming that a particular rumour is true.

Webber to Porsche is supposedly an open secret in the sportscar paddock. The only surprise to them is that it got leaked in April.

To me it makes sense.

It's a headline signing for Porsche + Webber's been outspoken about the current spec regulations. 2014 is also a new generation, so maybe Webber wants out?

No discussion about Sir Sterling sticking his foot in his mouth?

I don't see a problem with what Sir Stirling said. Care to elaborate on why you feel he put his foot in his mouth?

I don't see a problem with his line of thinking, but he would have been smart to decline comment.

I would venture to say that he probably thinks political correctness is bullshit. He would say that if you don't like my answer to your question then don't ask me for my opinion.

No, I know where to look for for top journalism. I'm expecting them to disappear off the face of the earth.
