That's great news! I wonder whether Penske will allow him to enter some NASCAR races?

Depending on what the IndyCar schedule looks like when the Cup guys go to Sonoma or the Glen, I don't see why not. The double-duty thing must not bug him all that much, since he was considering putting Tony Stewart in a car at Indy. *shrugs*

Cram that up your arse, Chip Ganassi!

Hopefully he gets to do some Nationwide races or something too.

Yeah, I know he's mad and I don't care. I do not care. I did not care then. I do not care now. I'm here to race him.

Montoya back to openwheelers?!?!?!?!?!!!!!1!

That's the best news about Montoya for nearly a decade! It's like Metallica going back to Ride The Lighting roots from Lulu. 8)

Excuse me for being Debbie Downer, but all I see in Montoya is a younger Paul Tracy with a Borg. I dont think he'll be all that good and will find himself in some wrecks. This obviously isn't the Montoya of even 2006, let alone 2001. This feels like a last chance, grasping for former glory thing to me.

I had a horrible day at work, and in general, but coming home to this news just makes me forget everything about it!

And also if true, hats off to Penkse.

A Paul Tracy? He raced the guys that are nowadays fighting for the championship and beat them quite hard. He is younger than guys like Kanaan, Dario and Helio so he still has enough potential. Sure he will have some adaptation problems in the beginning, but I doubt he is comparable to Tracy (maybe only in posture).

Yeah but while those guys have spent the last 7 years competing at the top of their game, staying fitter than ever, Montoya was throwing back hamburgers and dawdling around in 15th in NASCAR never improving. He was lightning quick at Daytona but when not much more than a very quick battering ram at Indy. Basically he's just driven heavy, lumbering cars that don't really test the reflexes, and I'd say he regressed over his time in NASCAR certainly with regards to physical fitness.

It's all well and good to say he did this or that back then but he's a different driver now and the guys he was racing are, too.

Then came discussions with Penske and all bets were off with the other teams. Montoya will team next season with current IndyCar points leader Helio Castroneves and Will Power while driving for Penske, winner of 15 Indianapolis 500s. He could also drive in some NASCAR races as part of the deal.

 :D

This could be key as to why he chose Penke over Andretti.
Michael didn't seem to want to take the risk on him and sign him before he got the sponsorship (who knows if he would ever have?)

Penske was ready to commit and commit NOW!

My reactions are "FANTASTIC! JPM BACK TO INDYCAR WHOOOOO!"
But also: Awww, Penske....do I have to start liking them now? :P

Also I'm probably the only one that thinks the comparison to Tracy is a compliment.
But then they do have similarly aggressive, balls out styles, are two of the best overtakers in the sport and have weight issues :p
But when they're fired up, and have been down the gym, there's no stopping them! :p

I can definitely see Montoya running a lot of Nationwide races next year in the 22 (or 12 is Hornish isn't back) and a few Cup races. Would be fun to see him run in good equipment.
