2012 Formula 1 ENI Magyar Nagydij - 27/28/29 July 2012
Image

Circuit diagram:
Image

Track facts:
Race Date: 29 Jul 2012
Circuit Name: Hungaroring
Number of Laps: 70
Circuit Length: 4.381 km
Race Distance: 306.630 km
Lap Record: 1:19.071 - M Schumacher (2004)

History:
Hungary first hosted a grand prix in the 1930s, but following the Second World War and the building of the Iron Curtain it was not until the 1960s that motorsport began to find a place in the country.

At the start of the 1980s there was a general wish for a Grand Prix to be held behind the Iron Curtain and negotiations took place with the Soviet Union with a view to a race being held in Moscow. In the summer of 1983 however, the attention of the Formula One decision makers turned away from Moscow and towards Budapest in Hungary, whose national sporting authority was keen to put the country back on the map of global motorsport.

At first a street race through Budapest was suggested, but in the end the decision was taken to build a brand new circuit in a valley 19 kilometres outside Budapest. The valley provided natural vantage points for spectators and in 1985 work began on the Hungaroring. The track opened in 1986 and it held its first Formula One event in August that year. It was a huge success and almost 200,000 fans showed up.

Although tight and twisty, the circuit has been known to throw up some great races, the most memorable being Thierry Boutsen's win in 1990, beating Ayrton Senna by 0.3 seconds, and of course the 1997 race where Damon Hill in the Arrows sensationally passed Michael Schumacher's Ferrari only to be denied the win by mechanical failure on the very last lap.

I think DRS won't have much of an effect here but Pirellis probably will. Without rain I don't expect much action in the race but with this year, you never know.....

But if it's to rain, I hope it only happens during the race and not on FPs this time!

I don't see McLaren winning there. Hungaroring is a circuit that suits a lot the Red Bull cars, also Mercedes may have a good performance, the circuit is similar to Monaco in some ways and back there Mercedes had a great performance, would have been pole position if it was not by Schumacher's penalty from the previous GP at Spain. Ferrari will be again a threat, but not so much as in Hockenheim.

Something that took my attention was that Red Bull had the slowest top speeds at Hockenheim and we saw when Vettel was chasing Alonso, that in the slowest points of the circuit, the Red Bull was very strong, which is a good sign for a track like Hungaroring. Also Schumacher 3rd sector was allways his best in qualifying, in the dry and in the wet, which shows that Mercedes also have a great balance for the most twisted parts of a circuit, they may be a real contender in Hungaroring, but its all a big guess, this season is proving against facts and against any predictions, we have to wait for the first practices to have a first idea of what expects for the weekend.

The best battle ever in F1 was Gilles vs Arnoux, but the best single overtake move has to be this one, Piquet's car control is unbeliveable.

I kinda get the interest in comparing to this occasionally for shits n giggles, but do we really need to have a weekly update? This system hasn't been in place for 10 years, drivers race to the system they're placed in so it's not really relevant, and there's not even anything interesting about the current comparison - it's pretty much the same ranking and gaps at the top.

It has some differences, at the top positions not too much, but as there would be no points from 7th to 10th, it would change some stuff. Its also nice to see how much points the team would score and compare to some years where the system were used. I think its nice to keep track and if I do this is cause I want to share that. This season don't have too much difference, but last season for an example, a lot of drivers wouldn't have a single point in this old system, this system that gives points only for the top 6 can show in numbers how much interesting things are this season compared to the last one.

It's a shame Hungary has been given the tarmac treatment everywhere, because it used to be a challenging little track with not a lot of room for error.

On the subject of great battles, this is one of my favourites. I know it's not Hungary, but meh. :p

Really? Last time I checked it said rain only in friday. Those things chance very fast, we will only have a real idea of what will happen when we get to friday.

This makes Massa suck balls even more! At least he has double figures in the current standings!

as ellis pointed out, he doesn't even have enough points to bridge the gap between Alonso and Webber at the top, rofl.

Lot's of thunderstorms predicted according to my Iphone. It's pointless to say couse it will change everyday, but I'm afraid rain is the only way to make this race interesting. On the other hand, Barcelona and Valencia where the best races so far..

I think it's good that Massa sucks, now we don't get team order situations like Hockenheim 2010. It makes me appreciate Alonso's season more than when he would have gotten some wins thanks to his teammate moving over. I actually don't mind Alonso being at the top of the standings, and I usually never support a Ferrari driver. But when he's driving as superbly as this year I can't help but like him again (liked Alonso in his pre-Mclaren days, but after his fallout with Mclaren which cost the team a drivers championship, I didn't like him anymore)

I've read that there could be rain on Friday, and thunderstorms on the Sunday. It's going to be warm as well.

Remember when we always used to hope for rain? We'd probably rather have it dry after the last few farces in the rain.
