Had he not went there, Jenson was putting him there anyway to keep the place. So is Vettel meant to make his car fit in there?

Vettel had to go there, otherwise there would have been contact.

he should have backed down and stayed behind button, he only was able to pass him BECAUSE he drove wide!

Sometimes life can be simple!

According to the FIA, you may not use the full track width when a car is alongside. So now what?

How about they grass the areas off track so that in these situations the driver HAS to do what they always did, get off throttle and fall in line.

The FIA make their own job more difficult by how they develop their tracks imo.

Cars started flying in GP3 because of the grass. So whilst I agree with you, they won't do it on safety grounds.

But you can see there that Jenson is moving to the outside of the track. He's on the throttle and even turning left..

But out of a slow hairpin I couldn't see that being much of an issue?

Vettel was ahead when he turned in.

Put some gravel in that place there. No flying GP3 cars and no people who can overtake over it.

I don't see the problem with Vettel's pass. We've seen multiple passes like that in the past and not one mention of penalty. Why should now be any different?

Because in those cases, cars were side by side when they left the corner and the car on the outside had to avoid contact. This time Vettel simply took a wider line even before exiting the corner and simply drove around Button, he didn't take evasive action.

That's my view.

Watch those past moves again then, in many cases they are almost identical. But I agree with Chris A's point, it is technically not allowed and that shows a flaw in these silly rules about defensive and attacking driving.

Vettel went off before, you shouldn't have to give that room if the drivers already off. Vettel chose to drive off and he knew exactly where Button was.

This pic points to me that Vettel could have straightened his car and driven side by side with Jenson.

Regarding taking the line, isn't there another part of the rules that you're allowed to take the racing line if you're ahead? As Vettel wasn't ahead while he was on track, Jenson had the right to take the line on corner exit.

Besides, Vettel himself has said repeatedly he went wide as he wasn't sure where Jenson was, not because Jenson pushed him off.

I can understand the argument that Vettel was just avoiding contact but if that was the case then why didn't he just let Button through straight away, just like everyone does when they cut a chicane while passing another driver?
