Only 80 minutes into practice and Harvick is on top at 199.236! I think he's in race trim too because of how quickly he's been laying down laps the last couple minutes.

Juan Pablo Montoya just laid down a 199.440 MPH lap. I think the pole will be over 200mph.

Truex just cracked 200mph. 200.261 was his lap. Dale Jr. also went over 200 just now.

That's pretty cool. I hope they don't slow them down.

The drivers have been giving the track's new surface rave reviews on Twitter. Harvick ran 200.999 just moments ago.

David Ragan tweeted that the track surface is great but the tire that Goodyear brought is even better.

I wonder if those are single car or draft speeds?

I don't think NASCAR will put plates on the cars, knowing how much publicity this will get them. Also it's safer as it's not pack racing at these speeds... And we know what happens when you put plates on cars other than Daytona and Talladega.

ARCA put plates on them at Pocono so they for sure will do the same here.

ARCA used tapered spacers at Pocono.

The reason I think NASCAR will run w/o plates is the nature of the track. At Daytona and Talladega they run faster in packs and can sustain the high speeds throughout a whole fuel run. That won't be the case at Michigan because they'll be spread out and times will drop as the tires wear. They'll still be quick but I think it will be a safe pace.

It's obviously not going to be like a plate race, but I can see a lot of close drafting whilst the tyres are fresh. Probably spread out as the tyres go off. Or I'll be completely wrong and it'll be a usual dull race, just at much higher speeds. :p

Whatever the outcome, it's the first time I've been genuinely excited about a NASCAR race at Michigan.

I think it will be basically the same deal as it has always been at Michigan. Just a bit faster than usual. Plus, it may be just a one groove deal til the track gets worn in and weathered. Who knows tho.

NASCAR has no business getting my hopes up after the shit of shame season its had so far, so I won't believe the talk about improved racing or expect anything different than the usual Micigan parade with the odd spin until I see otherwise on Saturday.

And there you have it. The quintesential argument for slowing down race cars is that "the fans don't care about the speed just as long as the races are good." I humbly use your post to propose that line is a crock of shit.
