I hope we will see more real fighting battles this year. Last year was a farce with DRS.

Yes, I hope for real fights too, like the one we saw in Monaco...

So, no passing at all then?

Strange....

Indeed, which was my point. People love to complain about DRS despite it assisting in giving us some great racing (like in Canada '11) forgetting that without it we'd have continuous processions like we saw in Monaco.

Yeah, I don't get how anyone can moan about anything in F1 at the moment (except perhaps the stepped noses) and DRS, KERS and the tyres are working together to keep the cars close and make the races more exciting.

Its not one thing that's standing out on its own, its all three in combination. KERS works to keep cars close for the DRS zone so they can make a pass, or it can be done the opposite way and use DRS to get close down the straight to surprise pass in the next couple of corners, etc.

It just baffles me as I sat through years and years of dull parades wishing they'd do something about the quality of racing and suddenly since the refuelling ban, year on year the racing just keeps getting better yet people seem to just bitch about it.

I get purism, some people just want to see the fastest car line up on the pole and drive away from the rest, but that's not what I want from the sport, so the best solution for me will always be a compromise between purism and entertainment and 2012 seems to be the best compromise so far...

Here's the Championship Standings as it would be in the old 10-6-4-3-2-1 system, amazingly, 3 drivers would be tied with 22 pts in the lead...

Drivers Standings:

01 - Fernando ALONSO - 22 Pts
02 - Sebastian VETTEL - 22 Pts
03 - Mark WEBBER - 22 Pts
04 - Nico ROSBERG - 18 Pts
05 - Jenson BUTTON - 16 Pts
06 - Lewis HAMILTON - 14 Pts
07 - Kimi RAIKKONEN - 12 Pts
08 - Pastor MALDONADO - 10 Pts
09 - Romain GROSJEAN - 08 Pts
10 - Sergio PEREZ - 06 Pts
11 - Kamui KOBAYASHI - 03 Pts
12 - Bruno SENNA - 01 Pt
13 - Paul DI RESTA - 01 Pt
14 - Felipe MASSA - 01 Pt

Teams Standings:

01 - Red Bull - 44 Pts
02 - McLaren - 30 Pts
03 - Ferrari - 23 Pts
04 - Lotus - 20 Pts
05 - Mercedes - 18 Pts
06 - Williams - 11 Pts
07 - Sauber - 09 Pts
08 - Force India - 01 Pt

Its amazing to see that after 6 races, the leader would have only 22 pts and the difference from the 1st to the 7th is only 10 pts

Just had a quick glance at season that didn't have any driver streak away at the start and I believe only 1982 would have a lower leader, with Prost having 20 points (and having been stuck there since Rd.2

The tyres are one thing that stand out on its own. There's a ranking to all 3 elements. KERS obviously has the least effect on the pattern of racing this year.

But Monaco has always been terrible for overtaking, in Canada you can overtake without help from DRS.

What we had last week was the best you expect from the track (except on a few occasions where the drivers are high on jack like in 2011).
Close racing like nowhere else in the world, a pack of 5-6 cars nose-to-tail, nerve-breaking zero-tolerance racing. The alternative is a boring spreaded pack from start to finish bar the odd crash.

In Canada it's so easy to pass that if a car is faster, it will just overtake immediately and leave in the distance. I don't like that either because it makes for boring races after a few laps where everyone is at the position according to their speed.

Canada to me has always been more about crashes, safety cars, and crazy shit happening everywhere around the track.

Last year Monaco was interesting because Vettel was leading on very old tires, Alonso and Button behind him could have a chance to overtake Vettel once his tires hit the clif. Then the red flag came out and we were robbed of a great finish.
This years Monaco was boring because everyone was on the same tires except Vettel, but he was 4th and could have maybe gone to 3rd but none could fight for the win. More rain could have spiced it up but that didn't happen. It was close racing but boring once you knew nothing can happen. The track gets points for being Monaco, but racingwise it should be dumped faster than Valencia.
No sorry, I take that back. Get rid of Valencia asap.

Canada is the exact opposite. For the last years, this has always been one of the best races on the calender. Before DRS, when passing was almost impossible, Canada always left me happy, with faith that F1 isn't that bad after all. Even now, you can take away DRS and still know something will happen. Canada doesn't need DRS, especially when it is on a place where passing was already possible if the driver was good enough. It's like the Kemmel straight in Francorchamps, people were already passing each other there, why give them DRS?

I think we saw a lot of passes in the past in Canada. Last year was a Farce. We could have seen a great battle between Schumacher, Webber and Button, but now Webber and Button could easily pass each other with DRS. That has nothing to do with racing and fighting for position. There was no fight.

I think the DRS should be allowed on all straights but the longest one. Therefore it is guaranteed the cars will be close for the whole lap, but with only the slipstream to help on the longer straight.

Also, honestly, even the old overtaking moves at the last chicane always consisted in one driver giving up before the entry, or shortcutting. It doesn't provide side-by-side action and does not really allow to cross-back and retake position like the harpins and normal corners do.
We all love the corner for the history and the wall of champions but objectively it's one of the poorest corners of the championship (like all chicanes of this type).

[/nitpicking] In any case, better than no pass at all :p

Rather have easy passing than none at all. Canada 2011 had great DRS zones.

Yeh it's a shame. I intended to go there. With our stiff government, nothing surprises me anymore. We've been in those protests for the last 11 weeks and the Prime never tried to even solve a part of the problem. Hopefully they don't get reelected

good. It was too easy last year. Although it was helped as well with different grip levels and tyre wear. Hopefully now not too short.

They need to bring the legendary raft race back with all 12 teams participating. It was a traditional until mid-nineties. It was revived for 2010 but only Team Fernandes and Williams took part.
