Having finally seen the finish, two thoughts:

* Dario's defence on Sato was exactly the same move Dixon made on Sato the lap before. Sato made a risky pass and it stuck on Dixon, he failed when trying it on Franchitti. End of.
* I'd like Dario a lot more if Ashley Judd's attention whoring mug wasn't shown every time he won. The two always being combined just results in this involuntary queasy feeling whenever he's on course for a win.

Marco can't catch a break... Only problems were going to prevent him from winning today and that's what happened.

Plus he had to dodge two cars on the pit exit lane in two separate incidents. Very unlucky.

Minutes after Sunday’s Indy 500, Randy Bernard received a text message from Tony Stewart: "Congratulations, that was the best Indy 500 I’ve ever seen.’’

Sato needs Jock Clear to navigate his way around that curve!

Shame it happened to him though.

Barrichello's 11th place earns Chase Rookie award By Dave Lewandowski
Published: May 27, 2012 @ 6:15 PM

Rubens Barrichello had competed (and won) at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway previously, but not on the famous 2.5-mile oval.

So entering the Rookie Orientation Program on May 10 – fresh off his rookie oval test at Texas Motor Speedway -- the Formula One veteran and IZOD IndyCar Series newbie didn’t quite know what to expect.

Yes, he received tutoring from KV Racing Technology teammate and countryman Tony Kanaan and insight from his engineer, Eddie Jones, team co-owner Jimmy Vasser and crew members. But much of quickly learning the peccadillos of the racetrack was under his control.

Barrichello, driving the No. 8 BMC | EMBRASE – KV Racing Technology car powered by Chevrolet, surprised quite a few spectators – and maybe himself – by qualifying 10th on May 19 for the Indianapolis 500. He backed it up with an 11th-place finish to win the Chase Rookie of the Year Award.

Barrichello essentially went to school in the first half of the race, being patient, adapting to running in packs and dealing with the turbulence. By Lap 148 he was in the top 10, and over the final 50 laps fought to remain there.

"It was a very busy afternoon,” Barrichello said. “I had to be a quick learner and the last 20 laps were totally different to the first 180. Today I wanted to be competitive, but I also wanted to make sure I was running till the finish. I think right at the end we had a little too much downforce on the car, but I am so proud of what we achieved. The team did a fantastic job of keeping me safe and I really enjoyed my first Indianapolis 500."

Barrichello, who turned 40 on May 23, was attempting to become the first driver to win both the Indianapolis 500 and the U. S. Grand Prix Formula One race (2002) that was held on the IMS road course.

“I’m still very proud of what the team has achieved,” he said. “And it’s a pity that we didn’t finish top 10, we’re just outside, but I can be proud of that for my first time out.”

Looking at the quality of the racing though, I hope the cars run like that at Texas and Fontana

It seems a bit handford tbh, huge slipstreams but no pack.
Which, as someone pointed out before, is just as artificial but a hell of a lot better than running around in one big pack being unable to pass, especially when there's a crash...

Indy is always unique so there's no sure way of knowing yet but the signs look a bit better than they did before...

Haha, thanks everyone on the forum, I managed to watch the finish posted by Marcel in the crash thread without spoiling it to myself. This is one of the reasons I like this place so much :)

Also, goddamn you Sato. Will you ever grow up...

Some shots from the stands:

I think it's fair to say the crowd wanted Sato to win, even though some people seem to have a hard time believing that.

Pretty much everyone wanted Sato to win. I haven't even seen a Dario fan saying they didn't want Sato to win. Just some people are looking for excuses rather than admitting Sato did what Sato does.

Why wouldn't he have gone for the move? It's the final lap of the biggest race of the year. He'd just completed a similar pass the lap before. In hindsight, he maybe should have waited for a run off turn 4, but then Sato probably didn't expect to be expertly driven down to the grass.

I laughed at the booing and the guy showing the finger at Ashley Judd on the Video-wall. :D
I watched the race on TV and thougt it would be nice if Sato will take the win when he was leading a couple of laps. In the last couple of corners I saw Sato fighting back from 5th position almost upto the lead. When he crashed I was disappointed, because I don´t like Franchitti, but when I watched the replays a few times, I considered that it was close, maybe Dario didn´t give enough room for Takuma, but all in all it was Takumas fault to go down on the apron.
