That's a strong evidence F1 should've never gone to Middle East...you don't have a genuine local public and a large fanbase that go to the Race course with their families to watch a race, you don't have ANY racing tradition in those places.....all you got is some rich businessmen and Monarchy members wanting to display luxury.

As opposed to the creation of motor-sport, which happened in a place where there was no motor-racing tradition and it was undertaken by rich people? Get a grip.

F1 goes where money goes. But equally, how do you expect to create a tradition if you're going to resist it. What about China? No-one turned up for years, but last weekend it was packed with enthusiastic fans. But of course, as it isn't Europe it's immediately a shit race...

The whole reason the race shouldn't go ahead is the concern over safety with regards to political unrest, not because there's no racing tradition.

Fucking FINALLY. Someone who uses logic and reason in regards to tradition.

Tradition also says we should race in Spain and France. Barcelona, Valencia and Magny Cours still suck massive amount of balls.

I'm not saying we should abandon Europe. Because Motor-sport is huge in Britain, you have a big fanbase in Germany, Italy and then there's Monaco. You have to treat Spain as a relative newcomer because until Ferni turned up no-one gave two shits about anything with four wheels in Spain. In fact, they're still heavily swayed towards bikes in Spain, you only have to watch TVE in Spain to see that.

The calendar right now has a good balance. I can understand being anti-Bahrain through the way the royal family operates, but to say F1 shouldn't go to a track because it has no tradition is just ridiculous.

It's like with the WC due to be held in Qatar. Yes, there is little footballing tradition and hence that will come. I'm opposed to it being held there because of the maltreatment of women, homosexuals, the corruption involved in the bud and the fact it will be so hot during the tournament there's a risk for health of players and fans alike.

Oh, and if F1 wants to stay in Spain post-Alonso, either cut that fucking chicane at the last section in Catalunya or race at Aragon. All of the other circuits in Spain suck.

help no. The outer track lay-out would be lapped 86 times over a race distance. If that lay-out were to be used it could well be one of my favourite races on the calendar...

Force India incident much more serious than initially described - Molotov cocktails flew over the car, tear gas also involved

Only one DRS zone this weekend (main straight). Actually I would have added another one on the straight after turn 3.

They should have put the DRS on the straight before the last corner IMO. We already have enough overtaking on the normal straight, now you just going to make that effect bigger.

if they shut have putten DRS anywhere, it would have to be on the back straight. Cars never manage to follow each other closely there.

Looking like a fun weekend ahead

Well they say that drivers these days are the "Playstation Generation", so in preparation for this weekend they've all been playing Call of Duty.

Predictions for a boring dry race

with a slight chance of murder

After the incident with Force India mechanics last night, I suggest the drivers start practicising on Grand Theft Auto.

I feel a bit sorry for the FOM staff at the racetrack. They have to stay in Bahrain for another full week at least.

It's fascinating to see the different approaches of the Force India incident. BBC/Guardian being very sensationalist, Autosport and Sky less so.

The problem is that because there's an expectation of trouble, the media outlets are looking for it. Had this happened in another country, it would just have been put down as a minor, albeit worrying and underwear ruining, incident.

I've read articles on Autosport.com this morning, interviews from Pedro dl Rosa and Nico Hulkenberg, where both say that safety is better than it is being made out to be.

This entire week I've been thinking about the Top Gear Middle Eastern Xmas Special when the presenters are dumped in a "war zone", prepared with flack jackets and fear, yet after driving around for a couple of days realise that the place is far safer and friendly than they originally expected it to be.

And then you have team members nearly getting flambeed and gassed, so swings and roundabouts really.

Well if you make the wrong turn it's always a possibility right? That's the same for any semi-dangerous city.

I don't know of any other F1 event in recent history where the participants were thrown into the middle of a war between the authorities and a quarter of the population.

You're right and that's something I'm not disputing. I'm merely drawing parallels around how the media portrays risk using the example of Top Gear (and Phil's post on BBC / Guardian / Autosport). TG maybe not the most reliable of examples, but it is still a valid point to make.

I do notice that one tactic of those who play down the security concerns is to point at other tracks- Interlagos, in particular- and claim that it's no worse than having Brazilian crime gangs trying to carjack you.

Not everyone is happy at that comparison.
