Given the financial troubles that Nine and Ten are in, i think 7 is probably the one who could most afford it.

As for the announcement, how is a new manufacturer entering the series "a significant announcement in the history of the series" (as the speedcafe article states) given plenty of other makes have run the series over the years?

I'd say its more likely a new event.... or maybe V8Supercars will tell us the record crowd that will attend Clipsal ;)

Ironic if it is indeed Nissan....... given V8Supercars was created primarily to get them out of the series in the first place!

In a nutshell;

In 1992, works cars in the series were fielded by Nissan (GTR), BMW (M3), Holden (Commodore VN) and Toyota (in the 1600cc class), with plenty of competitive Ford Sierra's as well (DJR, Glenn Seton Racing, Colin Bond etc..)

It was announced in 1990 that a new set of touring car regulations to replace Group A (which had been in place since 1985) was to be introduced from the start of 1993... but no actual regs were announced until early 1992.

Nissan had backed Australian touring car racing non-stop since 1981, as had BMW (bar 89-90). Holden's interest had waned since the Brock-split in 1987, while Ford hadn't been interested officially since the end of the "Moffat Ford Dealers" team in 1978... in other words no one was tipping in more money and support to the series than BMW & Nissan at the time.

Problem was that Holden wasn't winning enough (not that they were trying too hard), and Ford wanted to back the newly re-introduced V8 Falcon's in the series (which weren't homologated in Group A), so they both got together & threatened to pull out and perhaps start a breakaway series (with the support of series sponsor Shell, and series broadcaster Channel 7), and railroaded a set of regulations through CAMS (who were leaning towards a set of regs that allowed 2-litre Super Touring to be competitive with Holden & Ford V8s) that blatantly favoured cars with V8s.

Ultimatly turbo's were banned at the end of 1992 (which did away with the dominant Nissan GTRs, and the previously dominant Sierra's), while the works BMW's were welcomed at the start of 1993, but ultimatly treated like grid fillers (as there weren't enough new-spec V8s at the start of 1993) and paritied out of competitiveness.


Its ironic that Nissan are the first too return, especially as V8Supercars are making out they really need their money injection now....

V8 Bogans are some of the most stubborn white trash around, I fully expect to see a lot of nasty attitude towards Nissan.... however like all things it's only a part of V8 fans that are like that, I'm sure the rest of the "Non-Asshole" fans will welcome the decision, and lets hope this is the first of many manufacturers to join!

“We plan to use our presence in the series to strengthen our passenger car credentials in Australia,” said CEO and Managing Director of Nissan Australia Dan Thompson.

“Nissan believes that, alongside Ford and Holden, we possess the most convincing motorsport DNA and track history in Australia, making a V8SC debut in 2013 an obvious initiative.

“We are targeting No.1 importer status in Australia and already making progress towards that as one of the country’s fastest growing brands. V8 Supercars will boost that momentum.”

The announcement signals the return of Nissan to the top form of touring car racing in Australia after an absence of two decades.

It last ran a factory team with Gibson Motorsport and four-wheel drive Nissan GT-Rs in 1992, claiming the Australian Touring Car Championship with Mark Skaife and the Bathurst 1000 with Skaife and Jim Richards.

V8 Supercars Commission Chairman Mark Skaife, Kelly Racing Chairman John Crennan and Kelly Racing co-owner/drivers Rick and Todd Kelly were also at today’s announcement.

“I couldn't be more excited with the opportunity Nissan has offered Todd, myself and the entire team at Kelly Racing to become their official factory team,” said two-time Bathurst winner Rick Kelly.

“Nissan's genuine enthusiasm, unwavering support and absolute professionalism through this evaluation has been tremendous and underpins their absolute intentions of Championship success in the category - a dream we share and hope to deliver on.”

The model of Nissan that the team will use – and the engine package the car will utilise – will be announced at a later date.

Nissan’s worldwide motorsport activites of late have proven to be strong and successful.

They won last year’s FIA GT1 World Championship with a Nissan GT-R driven by Germans Lucas Luhr and Michael Krumm as well as the Japanese SuperGT Championship and took a 1-2 finish in the LMP2 class at the Le Mans 24 Hour.

Great news. Will be nice to see a bit more variety in the series.

With any luck the first Nissan win will cause as much problems among the bigots as the first Toyota win in NASCAR.

The combined results of the 2 sessions. Only David Reynolds who topped the 1st session didn't go faster in the 2nd session. Premat was the slowest of the regular season drivers and was beaten by enduro drivers Steve Richards and Cam McConville.
