It's funny, in introducing the simplified points system this year (which I like) NASCAR took several steps back from the strategy of offering higher rewards for places gained exponentially towards the front of the field. Whereas before difference between 43rd and 42nd was 3 points while 2nd to 1st (ignoring bonus points) was 5 points, now it's a 1 point difference all the way through. So they're really rewarding consistency more than they have in a long time.

Another fun fact: had the chase not been introduced and results been the same (which I know is a bogus theory), ol' 5 time would be ol' 6 time.

Yes, because the rumour was the was some extra thick lines in the car that held a gallon or so more, once they changed them back, they were no better fuel wise than anybody else.

Or so the rumour went.

If NASCAR really wanted wins to play a bigger role in determining the champion, they would've simply increased the bonus for winning by a lot in these past 8 years. Yet only did they not do that, they further devalued strong finishes with the 2011 points system. That tells you that they still want consistency to be the determining factor and their main goal with the Chase was mainly to guarantee a close title fight every year that was otherwise unlikely most of the time with the 36 race schedule.

NASCAR won't give big bonus points for fear random driver gets on a hot streak and stinks up the Chase. Period.

They should just do the Chase knockout style. 12 drivers make it in. Each week, the worst finishing driver gets booted. In the last race, you have 3 eligible drivers and the highest finisher takes the title. BOOM, guaranteed excitement EVERY YEAR!

I would say after 4 races the bottom 4 in points get eliminated, then after the next 4 races the next 4 drivers are eliminated leaving 4 drivers for the final 2 races to decide it.

I say go back to the old points system and maybe somewhere along the way remember what this sport used to be like before they decided they were a "stick and ball" sport and ruined the whole thing.

Obviously that would be ideal but I think the discussion is sort of floating around more realistic changes. I wouldn't imagine NASCAR will ever go back to a proper, cumulative system unless a new title sponsor with lots of money requests it.

NASCAR Snickers Cup

Not going anywhere for a while? Grab a snickers. It's going to be a loooong season.

If I had the money, I would found a company called "Two Girls One" and give NASCAR a title sponsoring offer they just couldn't refuse.

Remember, NASCAR is a business. They'll act where the dollar signs are.

That being said, they should go back to the old points system. 3-2-1 point differential and all.

Truck qualifying was rained out, Buescher starts from P1 from final practice.

Now I thought the go or go homers were set by time as well, but how is it that Tim George Jr who was 15th quick in practice is going home and Clay Greenfield who was 42nd is in? Guessing it has to do with number of starts too.
