The Chase for the Cup moves to the penultimate race in Phoenix to a slightly reconfigured and newly repaved racetrack, for 312 laps (500km) around the 1 mile oval. With Stewart and Edwards only 3 points apart and Harvick 33 back, it looks like a 2 man race with only 2 races remaining.

The NNS also is racing their penultimate race here and unless Edwards decides to focus on Cup and Busch isn't allowed to drive it'll be the usual NNS stuff, debris cautions, start and parks etc etc.

Little footage of the new track actually exists and its hard to say what impact the repaving and slight reconfiguration will have on the racing quality. The race in February was exciting, hopefully this one is too.

Seriously. Might as well race in a damn parking lot with all that pavement everywhere.

To be fair, we'd normally be complaining about the 48 cruising to another title at this point in time.

May be a cost savings thing.. it gets awfully hot there in the summer, probably requires a lot of water to maintain, and excessive water usage may get looked down upon.

Just a random thought from an Arizonan with a front yard which is composed of rocks.

During the tire test, the new track was very line-sensitive. So much so that if you even stepped a foot out of the groove, you went straight into the wall. And drivers like Brad and Kurt did wreck. Kurt twice. One of the plans NASCAR considered at the time was to force the K&N guys to run their race off the racing line to rubber it in. All I can say if they do that is, lol.

I heard Dave Moody mention that the track was going to hire drivers like LaJoie and Fedewa to just run a bunch of laps at a decent speed in the higher grooves to build them up. That was a week or two ago when he said it, but hopefully the track is still going to try this.
