Rubens confirmed to race the full season, which probably includes Indy.

I think Rubens press conference today promises to be a spectacle on tv, looks like he will be on TV in some minutes...only to confirm something we all know. I hope they can show his cars paint scheme.

It's official, Barrichello is in Indy and will do full season. He told his wife was a bit worried, she doesn't like that type of racing in ovals, but after a long talk, he convinced her and it's all done. The company that's sponsoring Barrica is the same that sponsors a Brazilian Stock Car team.

And in the end he said that it will be special to drive in São Paulo, because If he wins, nowhere else will be the perfect place to make that dance he used to do in F1 that he calls "Sambadinha" as he will be driving on the Sambodrome.

Gooooo Barrichello!

it's a strong field this year. Three Rookies (Newgarden) and two (Legge, Pagenaud) drove a ChampCar season. Barrichello is a Indy Rookie, not series Rookie.

I believe the greatest controverse in all this story (now I understand why it took so long for an official announcement) was actually to convince Chevrolet, which's supplying engines to KV Racing, about an exotic idea of having big sponsorship displaying Hyundai brand on the car. Uninformed viewers may think the car has Hyundai engines instead of Chevy engines. That's why I infer Chevrolet must have been a little reluctant on it.

Barrichello told he was already counting with BMC and Huyndai support in Formula 1 before Williams announced Senna, and once it didnt work out, he already had promising contacts with that company.

Honestly I don't think Barrichello spent all this time trying to convince BMC and Hyundai again for a new adventure abroad, I believe as soon as those companies saw Barrichello growing interest on Indy they've volunteered to help. It was all set up. I think a plausible displeasure arose from Chevrolet and I believe they've only accepted it because the driver in question is Barrichello because If it was someone else, they wouldn't give a chance.

Why not a series rookie?

Ok, I've come to this in passing and admittedly a bit late but I have a question..

Pack Racing?.. Someone care to correct/define that for me?..

It's racing cars running at high speed in close proximity to each other, yea?
So it's just 'Racing'..

Other wise wouldn't it just be be a high speed procession?

I'm poking Ian!

It's fuckin Racin!..

It's like boxers told they are not allowed to hit each other or Darts players playing on different boards and then seeing who got the best score!

Yes there's a danger involved, but there has Been since 1901..are we not used to it yet?
Ok I'm all to acutely aware that we lost a driver last year but this wasn't purely down to so called 'pack racing'.. There were a number of factors as well (inside out fence posts, that are not being altered.. Yet when Senna died they altered the track so the same thing couldn't happen again!)

Sorry but I'm of the "shit or get off the pot" school here.. These guys know what they do, And just look at the Speedweeks videos here, they show pack racing and then crashing yet no one wants to stop that!

The problem with the pack racing was it wasn't really racing - it was more follow the leader than the single file stuff. The cars just formed 2 lines and stayed in those lines for 30-40 laps until someone made a mistake, at which point all hell broke lose and cars flew through the air. At least in NASCAR packs, the cars move back and forward and shuffle about - Indy Car packs just meant the outside line got two thirds of the way alongside the inside car, and then they stayed there, and that was about it.

The cars simply didn't produce good racing in those situations, and 1 tiny error meant the mother of all accidents occurred. NASCAR accidents happen at 180mph, these IndyCar accidents were happening at 230mph, and it's just terrifying to watch. We all knew a death was going to happen with this car and track combination, and it eventually did. Even the drivers said it was just waiting to happen and they didn't want to race Las Vegas, and look what happened.

Motor racing is dangerous, and always will be. There is only so much you can do to make it safe, and I believe there is a limit to what you should do (We're not going to wrap the cars in bubble wrap for example), but IndyCar was on the wrong side of that line for too long and it looks like it finally hit home that something has to change. Unfortunately the new car was far too far into development to change it to something that would suit these ovals they want to run.

In saying that, these 1.5 mile high banked ovals are not far open wheelers - they are for stock cars. They are a bit thin and extremely high speed and do not suit IndyCars in any way (racing, or safety). IndyCar shouldn't even be considering these tracks IMO. It'd be like F1 deciding that Knockhill is a great idea. You just know it'd end badly.

Remember when IRL thought it was a good idea to race at Dover. There were no safer barriers in those days and the track was so rough there were always going to be bad wrecks.

You get to see how that feels in iRacing this week. Or as I call it, the "Spinebreaker 120"

Rubens won't be classified as a rookie in the championship, only at Indy. But c'mon, Mansell was classified as a rookie, and he was a the bloody reigning world champion!
