A couple of things that need cleared up...

The voice you heard during the 5 lap salute was NOT a track PA announcer. It was Mike King of the IMS Radio Network. I guess that they always want to be talking on a radio broadcast so people do not just tune in and hear silence and assume their radio is out or something. Tracks PA usually always play the radio broadcast of a race. Bristol does it with PRN.

Kulwicki's truck did not leave Dover in 1993. It left Bristol.

My heart cries for Dan's two kids. Especially the one year old who will only know his/her daddy through pictures. It's so sad and I cry as I type this. I'm a father of a three year old, and I felt as if even if I died today, my little girl will only know who I was through pictures. God bless Dan's family. That 5 lap tribute... Amazing Grace... ;(

Off slightly on a tangent, but I remember listening to Mayo and Kermode (British radio duo) about how the longest amount of dead time they were allowed was 90 seconds at which point a system would automatically recognise something as being wrong and set into motion some system that causes problems if activated.

God i hope so badly that we never see the footage from Dan's car. No way i could handle watching that when the camera turns black as he hits the Fence, it would just be far, far too sad :( :(

RIP, Dan Wheldon.
I didn't watch the race, but learn the news a few minutes ago on another forum.

I feel bad. I didn't feel like that since Senna, Alboreto, or Renna's death.

This is... simply terrible.

I wish I could just go to sleep, and forget everything that happened today.

You're not the only one to think that.

This one got to me as well, but I must admit that it's sadness mixed with anger.

First off, obviously this is terribly sad. Moments like this make everyone sit around wondering why the hell they love the sport so much when it can do this to people and take away husbands from wives and fathers from kids. I've followed Dan's progress from Indy Lights right through to his debut at Panther, his move to AGR and the truckload of success and amazing stuff he went on to accomplish from there. I was very pleased to see him win this year's 500, and to my mind there was no way that he should have been without a full-time ride in the first place.

There is anger, though, and that's down to why on the face of this earth were 34 open wheel cars ever allowed to be racing together on a track like Vegas. IndyCar's dodged enough bullets with its races at Texas as it is; here we had the largest ever field outside of Indy on a steeply banked circuit where there was no lift. As you all know, plenty of the drivers were not feeling happy before the race had even started.

There'll be some who'll say 'well, that's racing' and that Dan was unlucky, but I don't agree. If anything, we're fortunate to have only lost one driver today as we could easily have lost three or four. Four cars flying through the air isn't unlucky and it's not just racing; it's the inevitable consequence of two drivers tangling in the middle of a field of open wheel cars running so closely together. When that happens there's no skill involved, just luck where your car happens to be and what happens to come flying at it.

I'm done with this series as long as they continue to play Russian roulette with their drivers' lives.

I entirely agree with what MaTT said..Im not enjoying watching these 1.5 mile Indycar races and being more worried than I am excited about the racing. After about lap 5 in this race..I just had a sick feeling. I was just watching this race..I was just thinking, they shouldnt be doing this.

Not sure if it happened here but over at SG I think we were joking about how no-one from other series were interested in going for the $5mil, we made fun of the fact Wheldon and Rice were the only ones going for it. Imagine if we had more novices guys outside of IRL competing? Travis Pastrana was going to do it before he blew his ankle out, rumours a couple of NASCAR runners were planning on it.

Somewhere out there, Travis is glad he broke his ankle. A few others are thankful they didn't decide to participate in this.

Not that I blame them, tho.

Getting chills listening to the interview again. It's going to be a long off-season for IndyCar, for sure.

Hildebrand tweeted that he's "just fine." Pippa Mann will have surgery for her burnt arm.

Probably not. But perhaps this is the death of the pack racing aero formula for Indy that's been used for these short ovals since the IRL days. Hell I've always felt that NASCAR rolls the dice with restrictor plate racing, and they don't have open wheels.

The person who predicted an Atlanta 2001 repeat on page 2 of this thread was unfortunately correct. :(

RIP Dan Weldon. :(

RIP Dan Wheldon.

I understand fate and accidents happening, but that never should have happened.

I would just like to say that I'm sorry for some of the earlier posts I made regarding the retired number and other things.

I will not be saying anything more regarding this tragedy other than its a truly sad say for everyone involved and my sympathies with the friends and family of Dan Wheldon.

I can't even remember how many times someone got airborne with this technical regulation of car, yet the same basic spec was kept for what, 10 years?

Was looking through the IndyCar Discussion Thread for a picture of the new car to show someone and stumbled across some posts from earlier in the week. Unfortunately, they were kind of accurate.

Quote:
How awesome would it be to have a 3-wide start and a 10-car pileup. Dario involved, please.

Quote:
With Power's luck he'll get caught up in it :(

the championship i couldn't care less about at this point. im more excited about seeing whos gonna win ROY this season
rather than the US 500 crash i was thinking with all those cars we might end up with something like this.......
