Trying to settle things in my mind for a bit now, before going to bed.

We've had 3 cars flying through the air simultaneously all smacking into the fence, a couple of cars on fire, and in the end 4 drivers had to be taken to hospital, of which 1 sadly passed away. That's a pretty huge toll...something that I have never seen or heard of, not even in whole history of racing?

I don't know how I will be able to get up in 5 hours to go to my university workgroups, but I sure as hell will get up. I need to remind myself how lucky I am to be doing what I'm doing, and the only way to do that is to actually continue to do everything I caress so much.

There isn't much to be said that hasn't already been said, so i'll just say - RIP Dan Wheldon, the world feels your loss.

Just opened my autograph album to see Dan's on the very first page, that brought a lump to my throat :(

In this kind of moments I feel like never watching motorsport again, it suddenly looks silly :(

Was there ever any news on what the matter was with Pippa and JR?

I believe Pippa had a broken arm

Thank you.

EDIT: Reading elsewhere that JR is suspected of having suffered a concussion, which would explain the overnight stay.

Yeah, I know he's mad and I don't care. I do not care. I did not care then. I do not care now. I'm here to race him.

Don't usually follow indycar but this is really tragic. The 5 lap tribute with the bagpipes was incredibly moving.
RIP Dan.

Just heard. Terrible. I don't know why fatal racing accidents shock me so much, given the nature of the sport.
Perhaps seeing drivers walk away from crashes just as spectacular. RIP

Let me inject one dot of good news; Will Power has been released from hospital with no injuries.

EDIT: Source is Penske Racing's Twitter.

I'm not really sure what to say. Dan Wheldon was a great driver who had a great love and passion for racing. It was easy to see why he was so well liked by his fellow drivers and the fans. He had a very outgoing personality. I'm just in an absolute state of shock and sadness over Dan Wheldon's passing. This is a black day for motorsport. RIP Dan Wheldon, the entire racing community will miss him.

I always felt the same. I'm very unemotional, cold, maybe not calculating, but it can make you feel quite guilty.

Yeah me too, worries me sometimes how little emotion I feel with things like this.

Can't believe Power is not hurt, he had so much air and really landed heavily.

Just goes to show how incredibly unlucky Dan was, seeing as Power (and Mann) took almost identical routes into the wall as Wheldon, but hit with different parts of their cars.

Esben, your words were very touching.
Along with reading through this thread and reading that at the end, I am so upset right now.

I normally feel the same as you guys. But watching things live makes me feel different. It was such a dreadful emotional situation, and it just got worse as the time went on.

especially when you can see what's happening in people's faces but there not being an official announcement.

I think I ranted on facebook about ABC should just cut to a wide angle of the track and stop showing visibly upset people over and over without saying anything official, yeah we all know girls get upset and cry but when they're showing shots of mechanics and officials crying then's the time to be tactful with what you show, especially when the commentators have likely been told to wait until the announcement before saying something, so like all they can say is " oh look Tony looks upset, poor guy".

I still can't forget Earnhardt's wreck 10 years ago (especially the aftermath). This is the second time I saw a death in auto racing live. Goes to show you that it's dangerous work.

I know for sure both Earnhardt and Wheldon enjoyed every living minute of it. They wouldn't have it any other way.

Man, where to begin. I missed the race and heard something bad had happened from a friend of mine. I got linked to the video and what I saw had to be one of the scariest things I've seen in a long time. I couldn't imagine how shocking that could have been to see LIVE, without any warning.

I read through every page of the thread and it was good to see all you guys there for eachother on such a tragic occasion. You see these races play out in front of the TV screen and for most of us never in real life. It almost has this edge to it where it's not quite real, yet it is - like a movie, where the drivers are the actors. Then things like this happen that throws everything into perspective, that these drivers are not invincible. I don't know if anyone can relate, but that's how I've felt since I heard the news.

Man just... all we can do is pray that this doesn't happen again any time soon.

We'll miss you Dan. Rest in peace.
