It's amazing to think about all the circumstances that added up to put Wheldon in position to get in the wreck. First being released from Panther, then the Indy 500 win and finally the offering for 5 million dollars.

No real bad-taste was going on in the thread. Talking about this is something that some people need to handle the stress of not knowing, preventing them to do that is stupid. Everyone was praying and having respect for Dan. If you don't like the speculating, just don't open the freaking thread.

Without wanting to repeat myself again from elsewhere on the forum, I just want to echo the general sentiments being expressed here. I just got back from a lengthy walk, thinking about my gran (my mother's mother) who recently died and how I'm going to be sacrificing a day of a trip to Portugal in order to attend her funeral on Friday. Added to that, I've got to finish writing a first draft of a paper by 13:00 tomorrow and finish the whole thing before leaving on Thursday to get to said funeral. Basically, the concept of life and death is well and truly on my mind right now; and like I've already expressed elsewhere, my own daily problems and worries (like that paper) have just faded into insignificance.

But at the same time, it also makes me even more motivated to live my life to the fullest and do things properly. Such tends to be the legacy of just about anybody who dies doing what they love, but in this case it has definitely made a more profound effect on me. It's weird, because I've never really been a fan of Dan, but the circumstances surrounding his passing seem to have triggered something in me. I feel like I'm rambling, and I know it's a cliché, but we too should live our lives to the fullest. Make the most out of everything. There's not a doubt in my mind that skipping a day in Portugal, and all the extra travelling necessary to attend my gran's funeral is the right thing to do. I'm also going to work my ass off to finish this paper on time.

On a slightly different note, has anybody captured the 5 lap salute? I didn't get the chance to see it.

Dan was living in my hometown of St.Petersburg, and I had the honor of meeting him during the several GP's here. He was always full of life and an amazing person with us, the fans. It is true that only the good die young, and I'm glad he went home doing what he loved. ALWAYS will remember the #26 & #77. RIP DAN

I hope they do this, the money won't make his family happy again, but it'll give them one less thing to worry about.

I believe the money was some kind of insurance payout though wasn't it, so it was only ever going to be there if Dan won? I mean otherwise, it would be a nice gesture to ensure the family are financially secure, but I don't think that's an option.

So utterly tragic for his family.

No, you're not rambling, this makes perfect sense to me. I'm going through a very difficult time at the moment, and I feel witnessing this tragedy triggered something in me too. All in all, Dan died because he chose to live his life at its fullest too. It's everyone's fate, and we'd better make the the best out of it while we're in time.

If there's one thing I had to take from this race, I'll echo Esben's words: live life to the fullest.

I really cannot believe this. Watching the live broadcast without knowing what was going to happen was deeply shocking. I feel so sick and upset. Seeing him earlier this year at Goodwood makes it feel even more surreal and upsetting.

My thoughts and condolences are with their friends and family, and the whole of the racing world.
A terrible day :-(

There's massive request on iRacing to do a 77-lap race at either Las Vegas or Indy in honour of Dan Wheldon.

Now show must go on, it will be hard to fall asleep tonight. I never followed Indycar but you cannot ignore the sadness of people and the atmosphere. I really feel sorry for the family, friends and fans. I hope to never experiment such feeling myself. But I'm sure about 1 thing : he would have wanted that we continue to live our lifes, to enjoy motorsport, and to support drivers for the love of the passion we all have in common : motor racing ! Good night all :)

I get back home from working today, was excited to download the race, and thought I'd hop onto facebook before giving it a go, and then my wall is covered with RIP Dan Wheldon. What a shock. So sickening and such a shame. Prayers go out to him and his family, although it must be said that he can't have had many regrets as a two time Indy winner. Still have not seen a fatal crash live, and hope it never happens.

RIP Dan. You'll be missed.

Was there ever any news on what the matter was with Pippa and JR?

Yeah, I know he's mad and I don't care. I do not care. I did not care then. I do not care now. I'm here to race him.
