The Sprint Cup Series returns from an off-week to the legendary Brickyard, with coverage being handed over to ESPN/ABC for the remainder of the year. With Allen Bestwick finally taking over play-by-play from the idiotic Marty Reid, this normally painful TV tenure should be a little more tolerable. Also, how will Montoya be screwed or screw himself out of an Indy victory this time?

Just down the road, the Nationwide and Truck Series hit the half-mile at IRP (aka Lucas Oil Raceway). While it will mark the anticipated Nationwide Series debut of action sports star Travis Pastrana for MWR, along with the first ARCA race there in 26 years, it will also mark the final time NASCAR competes at IRP.

The track has stood as the last stand-alone race that has stayed on the schedule since the Nationwide Series modern era began in 1982, long after storied tracks like Hickory, Nashville Fairgrounds, South Boston, Rougemont, and the Milwaukee Mile have fallen by the wayside. It has also been on the Truck schedule since its inception in 1995. Whether you like IRP or not, its 30-year staying power even through the ever changing demands of the division is still a respectable accomplishment.

Sprint Cup: Brickyard 400 - Sunday @ 1pm ET on ESPN
Nationwide: Kroger 200 - Saturday @ 7pm ET on ESPN
Trucks: AAA Insurance 200 - Friday @ 7:30pm ET on SPEED
ARCA: Ansell Protective Gloves 200 - Thursday @ 8pm ET on SPEED

Indy is one of the least exciting races of the year, hardly any overtaking and single file for most of the race except the first lap after cautions

Hopefully Montoya finds another way to cock it up.

46 cars entered for the ARCA race at Lucas Oil Raceway( I know, IRP). Should be awesome. Dan Belcher and I will be there, with credentials! Looking forward to USAC Midgets and Silver Crown there the same night as well.

The fact that they are already advertising this weekend as "Pastranathon" I'm not looking forward to Nationwide coverage. Other than that, IRP is awesome.

How do you figure it's the last stand-alone race? Road America and Montreal are standalones as well...

Those are both newer events added in the past few years. Doesn't count toward his point.

Its possible that the USAC races will be streamed on ustream.tv. I haven't watched any this year, but I know they streamed races quite frequently last year.

I hope the races at IRP are HOF worthy.

That's a given. Direct all your hopes toward having the Brickyard not be SOS worthy instead.

I find the idea of stock cars at Indy to be sacrilegious anyways.

I guess that's a fair point. It's not like anyone is mad when sports cars or bikes race at Daytona for example. :) Indy is a historic track that has always been about the best drivers and teams in America (and some from around the world) competing to see who's best. And at the moment, it's pretty fair to say that the best talent in the USA is in the Cup Series, and so it more than deserves to be racing at the Brickyard. Even though I'd rather it not just because the racing is usually not that good there, no matter what series is racing. :)

For me personaly, but I only consider it that if it is on the oval. The road course is completely different in my eyes.

The Brickyard 400 won't last much longer if the decrease in crowds is anything to go by (forget the bad racing)

2006: 280,000
2007: 270,000
2008: 240,000
2009: 180,000
2010: 140,000
2011: 120,000? or less

That tends to happen when fans begin to realize how dull the racing is.

The 2008 tire debacle didn't help either, evidenced by the big dip in attendance in '09.

Sure it counts.

They're still stand-alone events, just added later.

Oh, and IRP wasn't on the 1982 schedule. It was first run in '83.
