A big fat fucking

Nine.

Or ten.

I don't know. Was very assured it would be a Ganassi walk over with about 60 to go, then all hell broke loose. The unexpected is always fascinating.

7, and that's being generous.

There was no real drama until the end.

Too me, Indianapolis is such a build up, and it rarely fails to deliver. It left me totally emotional, sympathetic with Hildebrand, but at the same time amazed and full of adrenalin. That justifies the 10.

Moments can make an entire race - 10 without a doubt

The atmosphere of the 500 alone makes it never worse than 5 for me - the whole build-up with the anthem, Jim Nabors, Mary Hulman, the flyover, the salute shooting, Taps, the driver presentation and a very well attended race this year.
Then it was Simona de Silvestro with her amazing courage to qualify the car and make the race despite her burned hands, I learned about Charlie Kimball (I have a friend with diabetes - he pulls out of everything, even if it's just a 10min karting turn or a simple visit to a pub)
The race - well it was a race, yes.
Then you had Bertrand Baguette leading, the fuel gamble at the front and finally an american driver going to win it in a National Guard sponsored car - that's what the american Open-Wheeler scene would have needed so badly to gain some momentum on NASCAR and then came turn 4
My livestream had stutters on the last 50 laps, so I saw Hildebrand going into 4 and next to the leader and the next frame was a car in the wall. I thought it was the lapper, but then I realized it's Hildebrand as I've seen him going around the lapper on the outside.

What else than a 10 can this race be???

7. Racing wasn't Indy great. But the last half was good, especially the last lap.

6 for the most part, then it turned into 10 during the closing stages. So it's an 8.

Bullshit. Fuck this shit. First Graham getting fucked over by Duno in 2008 and 2009 and now JR getting screwed by Kimball in the exact same spot. Fuck this. Fuck. This.

9. I enjoyed the whole race. No one ran away at the front, we actually had a race at front. And the final 40 laps were awesome.

Basically. There was racing at the front, but I got the feeling that even when the Ganassi boys and Tag were trading the lead that the red cars could just pull out and go whenever they felt like it. I never felt as if they were being really pushed. The ending, while dramatic, was not as good as when Gordy beat Mears or Little Al beat Goodyear or Hornish beat Andretti, so that keeps it back from being a 9 or 10.

Indy is a show with no equals, at least for what it is. There are other huge races, but nothing, save perhaps LeMans, has the history or prestige or magic that the brickyard has. That mystique goes a long, long way.

I had to give a 10, it would have been 9 If there wasn't that surprise factor in the end, but it was worth a 10 overall. When you have to rate Indy, you have to take in consideration the whole package, all the ceremonies before the race, the tv broadcast, everything. And this year everything looked good, maybe because it was the centennial race, lots of precious references to the past of motor racing, honouring memories to Ray Harroun, AJ Foyt, Mario Andretti, Emmo Fittipaldi among many other stars, facts and....impossible not to like Indianapolis, this event itself has an inspiring supernatural aura, it's exciting! It's hard to find any Indy 500 a boring race, it's nearly impossible, at least for me.
