And staying in the racing line when he was well of the pace.

Actually, I think in IndyCar, they encourage slower traffic to stay on the inside on the ovals, while the leaders pass them on the outside.

That's been the case for a long, long time in all kinds of oval racing, including in races like Daytona 24hours. Kimball did nothing wrong except running too hard when he had to save fuel earlier.

If Hildebrand slowed down a bit, he wouldn't have carried the speed to go up the track and into the wall. Wheldon would've had trouble getting past both of them if they were slowed down in front of him.

That's if Hildebrand had let off the throttle as soon as he got along side Kimball.

It's just an unfortunate coincidence, two rookies found themselves on T4 on the last lap of the biggest race. Drivers more experienced than Hildebrand have made the mistake he's made every year, just not on the last lap.

Happy for Oriol, though I thought he could win it...

Just got to the car, and after hearing the post race show on the radio, it's all Wheldon. Still, it was a great finish.

I think this is why Panther have gone for a protest

Will that change anything? Probably not

One thing that always amazes me about Indy is people being allowed to stand along that wall between the track and the pitlane. It's insane. One of these days a car is going to mount that and decapitate about 20 people.

Karun raised an interesting point, even IF they give the win to Hildebrandt (which is not going to happen), what about the scruteneering?

I half-jokingly brought this up in SG's race chat, but say this does get overturned (it won't but let's pretend it does)

What's to stop someone in the future from just stuffing their car into the wall while they're coming to the flag? As long as they don't fuck it up too badly they can still finish.

I read that the word at IMs is that Panther isn't going to protest after all. They don't have a case, but I'm pretty sure they don't want to win like this. They don't want to be that team.

I think that danger will decrease significantly once they stop using the Gigantic Piece of Shit Car they use now.

True, the new chassis with the sportscar rear end will reduce the risk of Conway/Briscoe/Brack style aerobatics (and hopefully be less prone to flying even without any wheel-to-wheel launch effect) but the danger's still there... especially with the two wide restarts now.

Watched the finish on TV... Did anyone notice one of the guys in the flagstand furiously stomping his foot when Hildebrand crashed?
