nascar you are a joke not changing the package for the boring 1.5 mile chase tracks so we get to see single file no passing spread out and only a "good" race when there is a debris caution with 3 laps to go

For the record, there were 14 different teams winning in 2001 and 12 in 1992.

That accounts for 13 cars and drivers. The idea that the underfunded/small teams are going to compete for wins each week is ludicrous in a sport where a budget of $25 million per car is required to be in the ballpark of competitive. They may get lucky (Talladega last year) but to think that week in and week out they're going to be at the front is not realistic.

Who even makes the decisions wrt the aero package? Who comes up with the rules?

Because I doubt engineers are involved. I think it's relatively common knowledge that with these kinds of cars, reducing downforce and lessening the importance of aerodynamics is the path to better racing.

Like, I am just trying to imagine how these decisions are thought up because it's baffling to me.

I have it on good authority that Brian France drinks a bottle of scotch and then consults an 8-ball.

Just seeing these cars going for top 10's and 15's would be a huge improvement. This is why the sport is dying. Who wants is going to dedicate their time watching TV or spend money on tickets to see the same 15 cars in the top 15 every week....predictable and boring is not the way to get the sport back on it's feet.

Ok hold the fuck up... How often did these so called small teams actually win in the past? Since the early 90s it hasn't been much different. We have actually had more single car teams win in the last few years than in the last decade. I believe the last single car team to win before Front Row at Dega in 13 was craven at Darlington in 03. Even look at the 90s. Single car teams winning went away about 97 on. This shit is not new. In fact it's been better as of late.

Phoenix was a single car team in 09 when Keselowski won Talladega.

I don't expect small teams to challenge for wins regularly. It wouldn't be such a feel good story if it happened all the time. The problem for me is that outside of plate races, a small team has absolutely no chance. Full stop. If you drive for BK Racing, or Front Row, you might sneak one or two top 20s in an entire season in a race with a lot of incidents. If you drive the 32, or the 98, you'll qualify 40th + regardless of how talented you are.

Of course the big teams are always going to fill out the top 10, but I'd like it if a talented driver could haul a bad car to a top 20 finish. Maybe it's rose tinted glasses, but I think that happened more in the past. Now, it's far more about the car. I rate Cole Whitt and Landon Cassill pretty highly but they will always run 25th - 30th because of the equipment. I wish driver skill could move a driver up the field a little more.

And that's the other thing that bugs me. The top teams already have their future drivers in their Nationwide or Truck teams. You can't blame them, but it means that the underdogs in those series will hardly ever move up. Ryan Sieg is a great example of somebody who does a fantastic job on limited resources, but will a decent Cup team ever pick up somebody like him? I doubt it.

The shift really came about as the bigger teams added more and more cars. Now they run up to four cars, can share information and that gives them such a huge advantage over single car teams and even two car teams.

Aren't they limited to 3 cars officially? Or has that been dropped already? I do know they found loopholes however.
Makes you wonder why the smaller teams don't band together however.

It was limited to four when some teams started running five. But a loophole allows you to run a fifth part time for a young drive, like Hendrick is doing with Chase.

That was actually the last time a non-American driver won an oval race in the top series of NASCAR

And he was driving for Junior Johnson, one of the big teams.

Thing is, today all the tricks are known and so a little gain in some area has a giant advantage. Finding that little gain requires vast amounts of resources that only the best teams can afford. In the old days, a little team could hit upon something and it would be a real advantage for a while or even for a race.

Bumping this thread due to yesterday's awful proceedings.

The GWC is the kind of gimmick that should never have been half-assed. Either make it unlimited or don't do it at all.

Isn't arca's unlimited?

I don't care how they work out the cutoff I've always said the final lap should count toward the gwc and only when the chequers is waving is the race over.
The main point of the gwc is to eradicate yellow finishes so there's no point having it if things still end under yellow.
