Well, racing is the only sport that doesn't have a guaranteed climatic grand finale. You could go into the last race having the championship already decided, and that sucks. Look at what happened with vettle wrapping up the championship 3/4 into the F1 season. I hate that.

This will at least guarantee that the final race of the season will be interesting like every other sport.

Imagine if other sports used motor racing rules and the Super Bowl became just another game.

Why are we comparing stick-and-ball sports and motorsport?

Besides, not every game 7 or Super Bowl ends in a tight game...you'd be surprised how many blowouts we have. Same deal here. If the championship gets clinched with 2 or 3 races to go, so be it. Plus, even if the race winds down to the last race, it's not a guarantee that they'll fight tooth-and-nail with each other since those guys have everyone else to deal with.

I tend to care about how thrilling individual races are over a championship. Especially in NASCAR since the Chase and especially now as the whole thing seems kind of meaningless.

Don't know if any of that made sense, I'm tired.

Here's a list of Super Bowl scores since 1990. Like Tommy said, not every one came down to the wire. Only in the last 10 years, they have been some what close. The 90's produced some real blowouts.

2013 Ravens 34, 49ers 31
2012 Giants 21, Patriots 17
2011 Packers 31, Steelers 25
2010 Saints 31 Colts 17
2009 Pittsburgh 27 Arizona 23
2008 New York 17, New England 14
2007 Indianapolis 29, Chicago 17
2006 Pittsburgh 21, Seattle 10
2005 New England 24, Philadelphia 21
2004 New England 32, Carolina 29
2003 Tampa Bay 48, Oakland 21
2002 New England 20, St. Louis 17
2001 Baltimore 34, N.Y. Giants 7
2000 St. Louis 23, Tennessee 16
1999 Denver 34, Atlanta 19
1998 Denver 31, Green Bay 24
1997 Green Bay 35, New England 21
1996 Dallas 27, Pittsburgh 17
1995 San Francisco 49, San Diego 26
1994 Dallas 30, Buffalo 13
1993 Dallas 52, Buffalo 17
1992 Washington 37, Buffalo 24
1991 N.Y. Giants 20, Buffalo 19
1990 San Francisco 55, Denver 10

nascar is not a stick and ball sport. true. but it is a sport whose modern existence is rooted in television and advertising attractiveness. as we all know racing costs a lot of money, and this new points system - like it or not - will guarantee that you, me, and everybody else will be watching that final race in homestead; which means nascar can guarantee paying advertisers that millions of people will be watching that final race, and the races leading up to it.

new points system = money

my initial reaction was against it, but ultimately i think we'll all end up liking it after a couple seasons.

If Brian France ran the NFL he would've tied the score in the 4th quarter of the Super Bowl to keep things "close".

I'd rather have close point battles happen some years and other years not be so close. When it's artificially done it makes it less special in my view.

Agree. Manufactured excitement takes away from the genuine excitement that's created by genuine competition.

They should work on making the drivers and racing more interesting, but this new format is easier to create and easier to sell. So that's what we've got.

The most powerful (or loudest) guys in any organisation tend to be in marketing and publicity, not engineering or technical areas. So the dumb, simple to understand "Imagine this!" proposals get legs while technical considerations get ignored since they don't get the attention of the right people (who usually aren't technical either). It's the same reason most software packages focus on introducing new gimmicky features rather than sorting out long-standing architectural problems.

Well that, and those people need to justify their jobs. I'm sure a lot of people were hired while NASCAR's popularity boomed, now the bloom is off the rose these people have to come up with something.

It really sucks for Andrew that he's not able to report on NASCAR data anymore, but at the same time I think he'll end up coming out ahead on all of this. Dude's even smarter than the site shows and it would be a mistake if someone in the industry doesn't pick him up.

SSSSHHHH!!! Don't tell NASCAR but, you can find all sorts of ratings info from now til 2001 on Jayski..

http://www.jayski.com/news/pages/story/ ... tings-2013

I suppose speedvision, motorsportstv.com, winston cup scene, and the daily planet paid to be able to discuss ratings and their increases and declines?

Surely almost every race that ends under yellow is anticlimactic*.
But safety.

*One notable exception was in January.
