Detroit Grand Prix could return in 2012

Quote:
The Detroit Grand Prix could return to Belle Isle next year, after an absence of four years. An application has been made to the Detroit City Council for the race to be held June 1-3, 2012. Bud Denker, chairman of the Detroit Grand Prix Association, said today he hopes the application will go before the council for approval next week. “We’ve talked to the IndyCar Series people, and they are very pleased and interested in coming back to Detroit,” Denker said. “The important thing now is getting city approval and tying up sponsorship.

IndyCar is looking at eight possible street races in 2012. Qingdao, Rio Grande do Sul, Sao Paulo, Detroit, Long Beach, St. Pete, Toronto, and Baltimore.

and road america, portland, laguna seca (minus sonoma...that track produces boring races and it's not laguna seca), michigan, vancouver, denver, surfers, nazareth ( ), phoenix, and pocono.

I hate how they go to street circuits rather than permanent circuits which have a ton of history in American open wheel racing.
There are some great tracks out there which I'd rather see them go back to, Road America, Laguna Seca, Portland & Cleveland for instance.

Its not that I don't like street circuits, I just hate them overlooking places like Road America which would likely put on a better race than we often see at street circuits.

Personally, I'd prefer they ban all the street tracks except Long Beach. There are more than enough permanent road courses of quality in this country to fill the calender.

Depends on if they can come to an agreement to race there I guess, I remember the Elkhart Lake owners being somewhat wankerish in the past.

I always thought that the Las Vegas track on witch Champ Car ran in 2007 was just awesome. If i remember correctly it was the fastest street circuit in the world. Too bad it was a flop in terms of spectators, and the race itself sucked because of the DP01 problems...

Convince the fans to actually travel to the permanent road courses and they would race on them. Unfortunately the crowds at everything except street course races are dreadful.

Seems like the perfect solution would be to have those natural road courses closer to metropolitan areas. Can't really do much about that now though.

The new Austin track is ideal for that, but it's only one track. Would be nice to see the Indycars go there too. Hell, it would be nice for any series to go there and establish a a solid foundation for all motorsports in the area.

Long Beach? That is such a boring track. Also Laguna Seca, I hope they never return there. Only good single seater races I've seen here were the A1GP races.

Cleveland should come back in the place of Edmonton, and Road America is also a great track.

Long Beach has the second biggest history in AOWR after Indianapolis. Plus LB also draws the biggest crowd outside Indy. No way they're getting rid of that. It's like dropping Monaco off F1 schedule.

Saavedra won't return to Conquest for the final two races. As mentioned during the Motegi coverage Dillon Battistini will have a test at Kentucky on Friday and looks set to make his debut in the race itself on October 2nd. Personally I see him doing the Vegas finale too.
