It is the same with the FIA killing off the WTCC in 1987 as it was so popular and it attracted a lot of manufacturer support and star drivers.

It was a rival to F1 so they tried to introduce the Procar series and then canned the WTCC. Later on they dropped the Procar series due to costs and lack of manufacturer support.

If Procar had succeeded, it would have been then cancelled too because of F1 rivalry?

"A lot" of manufacturer support and "star drivers" doesn't mean much, unless you can turn those to numbers. I'm not denying politicking, but if you're (also ellis) saying the main reason for cancelling the championship is supposed F1 rivalry, when the series in question is one year old (despite ETCC background), it is questionable. Even more so with the old FIA GT (endurance series, not driver-centric, just by nature it's not mainstream).

Citations needed.

Yeah, same. And ITC wasn't "one year old". It had run half a season of ITC rounds the year before, and run successfully as DTM before. Saying it was only 1 year old is like saying the Sprint Cup was only a year old when it changed name from Winston Cup. It was a successful formula on it's way up which was very obviously killed.

Common knowledge already back then or in the internet age? Objectivity tends to be blocked nostalgy.

I didn't say that about ITC. Read again.

I have created a thread about the FIA Procar series a few years ago:

viewtopic.php?f=36&t=1389&hilit=procar

Maybe it is worth a look and we can see what was reported at the time.

I think I go with ellis, dicksplash and bigears with this "conspiracy".

I remember that already back in the day the DTM/ITC was almost as popular as F1. Or at least in Finland it was. We had our only F1 world champion Keke Rosberg in it and JJ Lehto was there, while Mika Häkkinen and Mika Salo were struggling with their inferior cars in F1. Also Finland had its own DTM/ITC race (later on it was FIA GT and F3000) which raised the popularity of the touring cars.

DTM was seen as the series where the action and tomorrows automotive innovations were while F1 was "boring" open-wheel racing of rich people. It was also the series where tickets were cheap and you could very easily get to meet the drivers and see the cars in the paddocks. In (Finnish) sports news you could see highlights and results from F1, WRC and DTM/ITC. After the DTM/ITC was gone, it was just the F1 and WRC, both FIA regulated series, while DTM wasn't.

I think the popularity of the DTM was too much for FIA and Bernie. The ITC was the plan to kill it and it worked.

Now, there's no need to make a fool out of yourself if you don't agree with someone. Being polite is not really that hard and it could actually help you to get your opinion valued by the ones you disagree.

Also, it's not my theory, I don't take any credit out of it.

I know it says '2012' in German, but I just see the thread title as 'blah blah blah wolf'

Love the looks of the BMW (the car itself, not the livery).

Was not expecting a BP / Castrol scheme to be unveiled first, was really expecting more of a factory livery first.
