Supposedly IMSA tried to buy the rights to the Can-Am name for the Ultimate Racing Championship, but failed. To me, that'd be the ultimate insult (see what I did there?). Using the name of a series which was almost completely open regulations, on a GT3 spec series. I can't think of anything further from the original concept of Can-Am than this.

What would be the difference between GT3 spec cars and the Shelby CanAm series? Performance-wise I dont think it would matter much

Probably around the same speed, but given those chassis have been in use since the 80s and all they've done is change the bodywork and swap the engines a few times, they've stood up well. That series is only called the Can-Am because that's what the car is anyway, it's not really using the Can-Am name. It's like the Ford Fiesta Cup - they don't really own the name Ford or Fiesta, but the cars are called that, so that's what the series is called.

Apparently a revised AMR-One is testing this week. Presumably they will attempt to make it run for an hour without dying, rather than attempting to get any sort of performance out of it.

Which is what they should have done before trying to race it.

Ok so apparently the McLaren GT3 rumour for URC was bullshit (which, given who broke the news shouldn't be a shock, so my bad).

They are using this instead

Which isn't as old as it looks. Based on this:

That makes the proposed use of "Can Am" less ridiculous, doesn't it?

Looks brilliant

So basically we're using M8F replicas... I'm not really sure what we're getting at here, but there are no media releases on this whatsoever... It looks like literally no one cares...

That has 4-car-grids written all over it, which is a shame cos it looks quite funky. ALMS needs a lot more than that to raise some interest overall though.

Cars will be just under a half-million dollars and it's an arrive-and-drive series.

@ten-tenths: In todays Autosport it states there are plans in place to reduce diesel power levels by 40bhp, the ACO had secret timing loops at Spa to monitor performance, and are working with Singer and the FIA. Ulrich says he's aware of the plan and is worried diesels won't be competitive, OAK say it's a step in the right direction.

Tired of this shit. Both the situation and these attempts to do something about it are shit. Also lol @ Ulrich, but of course he is just saying what he has to say. 2014 can't come soon enough.

I think it's a complete joke that the works entires are held back simply because private entries can't keep up. It has nothing to do with diesel technology, and simple logic tells you that. The amount of development that went into the R18, with the amount of different aero parts they tested and changed is completely unparalleled. If suddenly OAK are able to challenge them with old Pescarolo customer chassis and customer Judd engines, then something has gone seriously wrong.

When Audi ran petrols, they still dominated. They even weighted and restricted the R8 down to the point where it couldn't pass GT cars in a straight line without a struggle, and it still managed to win. Restricting the diesels simply because the works teams run them is wrong - we've seen what happens when customer teams like Kolles are given diesels - they can't keep up with the good petrol cars.

Love it or hate it, customer teams can't challenge works teams due to development, not due to a rules imbalance. If they continue to restrict diesels then Audi and Peugeot will simply swap to whatever technology benefits them the best and we'll be back to square one.

I meant that I'm just tired of this whole situation. These blue-eyed privateers constantly bitching about it (http://auto-racing.speedtv.com/article/ ... uivalency/) are obviously one part of this shit. But still, I'm sorry if you honestly think there is currently a perfect equivalency in place and absolutely no room for improvement. With the way the regs were (again) written, equivalency is an impossibility.

Exactly... new rules and both Audi and Peugeot selected diesel. Coincidence? This alone is an argument.

Audi and Peugeot selected diesel. Meanwhile Aston Martin, Toyota, Nissan and Honda all selected petrol. Isn't that a good counter argument? If diesels really are as good as they claim then others would be running it.

In reality they aren't that good, as we've seen when privateers get hold of diesels. The only one that's been good enough is ORECA, who are as close to a proper works team as you'll get without being manufacturer backed anyway. Give other teams diesels and they don't quite stack up - and that's when you give them a proper works developed one, not just telling them to go make there own.

Whilst there is indeed no such thing as complete equivalency, once you take into account the teams running the different rules packages, the argument of diesels being too good simply doesn't stack up. If you restrict them then they'll move back to petrol and continue to dominate. And then they'll bitch to get them slowed down on a car basis, rather than rules package, and that's where the agenda becomes clear.

Pickett has the least right to complain. He's running a car which is now in it's 3rd year of competition, and Audi and Peugeot are running brand new cars. If that Aston even gets close to the Audis or Peugeots then the rules are horribly balanced in his favour.

Obviously no: not works entries. Since there are no other manufacturers besides AMR which we can exclude from the comparison for being laughable in every way, there are no "others" really right now and probably won't be until 2014 which is depressing.

Since the issue is about engines, all other aspects should be ignored.

Agreed. The way the BoP rule is written, it almost makes that sound possible, though.

Didnt know this is a six hour race, makes things a bit more complicated.

My plans to watch the IndyCar race tomorrow morning just flew out of the window.
