"They" didn't kill Hockenheim. Hockenheim committed suicide. It was Hockenheims own decision to butcher its legendary "Ring", there is a very interesting documentation on YouTube (although its in german).

I believe this is the circuit:

Pretty sure this was in one of the Mario Kart games.

I know that the layout is different but when i see this is see Bahrain. Suppose it is the twisty back section.

Yeah, I know he's mad and I don't care. I do not care. I did not care then. I do not care now. I'm here to race him.

Designed with a bendy ruler while drunk then.

Does the designer have Parkinsons?

Just noticed, the middle bit looks a bit like a man dancing.

What has been seen and all that...

It's great! It looks like that after all the 2km-long straights to 'improve racing', designers just stopped giving a fuck and went for a twisty, demanding track.

I fully agree. I say don't let the drivers relax their necks/forearms or breathe during one lap. Make them bitches earn their wage.

It'd be a 55/56 lap race if F1 went there.

Either way, they 'broke ground' on Friday. They're aiming for Grade 1, but I don't know how advanced any negotiations are regarding F1.

I actually quite like that. No hairpin into 1 mile straight into hairpin. I know it won't be, but at least it looks green and pretty on the map.

A few of us Twittering about old Hockenheim. I resent the fact that the circuit was butchered so more spectators could see, yet we now have F1 races where 27 people attend *sigh*

Maybe we should start a petition :p

So if someone designs a circuit with long straights into hairpins then it's "boring" and has no character, but if someone doesn't do that and instead designs a circuit with twisty, flowing sections that look a real challenge, then it looks "stupid"

So basically, all new circuits are automatically rubbish...very open-minded thinking

For what it's worth, IMO the first was OK and the second looks great

Trees make F1 circuits a lot of the time. Put old Hockenheim in the environment of Bahrain and it'd be shitty. Problem with modern tracks, as has been stated many times, is too much run-off, too much tarmac, shitty places like Abu Dhabi and tracks that are just 'meh' and lacking in defining corners that are challenging.

And they're not all automatically rubbish. Singapore is quite good, but so many are shit and unforgettable. Meh, I don't care, I just want Old Hockenheim & A1 Ring back. Hate me for that.

Of course it looks silly, it's nothing about the challenge it's that it looks like the designer made pointless sections just for the sake of it. There are plenty of parts that should have been a straight.

But people have always said that about new circuits. People said that when Hockenheim was upgraded after Clark's death. For a long time it was never really well-liked. The racing certainly wasn't very good there. A number of other tracks weren't liked for the same reason - the new Nurburgring, Paul Ricard, and particularly Nivelles. It's not something new to whinge about run-off and all that bollocks

All new circuits won't have character because character is something that develops over time, when the circuit has a history to reflect on. In Lap of the Gods (which must've been made in the early 90s) Murray Walker says both Hockenheim and Suzuka aren't great circuits. The A1-Ring was regarded as a complete mess when it was built. Now attitudes have completely changed. Nostalgia and rose-tinting is not a new thing

Mostly because they look good compared to new tracks. Nothing rose-tinting about that.

Turn eight at Turkey won't gain character because the tarmac runoff pretty much nullifies the challenge.
