Strange timing. He was one of the most vocal drivers about taking downforce away from the cars. Now that NASCAR is slowly heading down that road, I thought he'd find more enjoyment in driving the cars.

Oh dear.

Quote:
NASCAR Considering Significant Changes To Race Formats, Point Distribution

The Sports Business Daily is reporting that NASCAR and industry stakeholders are considering significant competition changes to the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series that could be implemented as soon as this season. Sources said that stakeholders across the industry including teams, drivers, tracks, media partners, Monster and NASCAR have been meeting to discuss the prospective changes which involve the format of the races themselves and how points are awarded for them. If implemented, the changes could address the length and format of Cup races and may result in race breaks, similar to other series where "heat" formats are used to break up the competition to feature multiple, shorter races rather than one longer one. NASCAR declined comment. It could not be determined how far along the discussions are, but timing is of the essence as NASCAR's season starts in mid to late February. Its season-opening media tour, when major announcements are often made, is in two weeks in Charlotte.

Could be why Carl retired then. Rather then put up with more crap.

But the heat races in the Xfinity were a huge dud. Why expand this? Also, heat races serve no purpose if people are not being eliminated. Do we even have 40 cars in the field for 2017?

Take time trials, line up four 10-15 laps heats with the top 6 cars inverted based on time, finishing order sets the field. Pit road picks are based on TT speeds and award 1 point for the fastest time (to try to keep them from sandbagging.)

OR... Just admit that everything that's been tried has sucked and that the current management has fucked it all up so badly the only answer is to shit can the whole thing and go back to the way it was in 2000. Deal with the cars we have.

Doubt it, so they'll cut it to 35 or something and they'll have even less part timers so struggle to fill that too.

They've already claimed a full field is 36 cars, not 40.

I never understood the reasoning behind Nascar cutting down the size of the field. It seems counter-productive. Wouldn't you want to keep the fields larger, at the very least to entice more teams to join Nascar without the fear of failing to qualify? Not by Nascar's logic. They're embarrassed because they can't fill a field, so they cut off their nose to spite their face. An organization run by petulant children.

Fewer cars = less money to pay out in prizes = more money for the sanctioning body. The prize money paid out to non-Charter teams is only a third of what the Charter teams get.

Yeah, I know he's mad and I don't care. I do not care. I did not care then. I do not care now. I'm here to race him.

I'd be ok with a heat race format if it was for one special race a year, maybe Bristol or some other short track.

Or even better, for the All Star race weekend.

Knowing NASCAR, it'll be replacing the 2nd Daytona date for heat races on that short course the modifieds used or something

Maybe they'll set qualifying by a fan vote or something.

Hell, why not set the chase to a fan vote. I'm really surprised that they haven't had a "wildcard fan vote" for an entry into the chase yet.

It doesn't matter anymore, why not go all in?

For me, Edwards left after Texas and Atlanta repaves announcements. Nothing will change my mind on that. :D

Can't blame Carl for wanting to leave - that caution was complete and utter bullshit

NASCAR's never going back to the version most of us like to remember, so personally I don't have an issue with them trying something new as long as the idea isn't obviously flawed from the start. 4 hour 500 mile races every weekend are definitely outdated and could benefit from some changes.

The length of races is only a problem because the youth of today expect everything to be a available instantly, back when we were kids nothing was instantly accessible and if you wanted to know what happened and didn't have coverage, you either had to watch the news to see if something happened or, in the UK, wait until Motoring News was published on a Wednesday to read about it.

So if we had coverage, you were quiet content to sit there for 2-4 hours to take in the event. NASCAR could run 10 lap sprints each Sunday and the television audience wouldn't improve, the product isn't so much the problem, its only a symptom of a much larger social based change in habits. People get bored quickly now because there's always something more exciting to watch just a few clicks away.

I still think there is too much down force and they should cut the splitter and skirts off and go back to sending a ton of air under the car,but even i'm not naive enough to think that will fix NASCAR's problems.
