No disrespect to local boy Fred Lorenzen, but no way is he more deserving than BP for a HOF spot. Yeah this shit is just dumb

It's only my personal opinion, but I'd say Rex White is a lot more of a left field choice for this HOF then Fred Lorenzen. I'm a lot more surprised that he got in over BP compared to Fred Lorenzen getting in over BP. Actually, there are quite a few people who you would normally have expected to have got in over Rex White. He was good, but he seems like one of those guys who really benefited from many of the top drivers not driving the minor events in the early years.

This is why they should get rid of Halls Of Fame. The majority of discussion is about who didn't get in.

It's like that in other sports as well. If you're an NFL fan, you got pretty sick and tired of the Cris Carter got snubbed talk the couple years before he got in.

I still don't see how Wendell Scott is anything more than a PR stunt. Janet Guthrie needs to be in too because she paved the way for women racers and was ridiculed and laughed at.

It's going to happen again.

Quote:
•Dogecoin and reddit to sponsor the #98 and Wise at Talladega: One week after voting NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Josh Wise and the #98 Phil Parsons Racing team into the All-Star Race, the Dogecoin and reddit communities kicked off another collective effort in support of Wise's NASCAR team. This time, the group focused on primary sponsorship for a second Sprint Cup Series race. With their fundraising goals met in less than a week, Dogecoin and reddit will again sponsor Wise's #98 Ford Fusion at Talladega Superspeedway on October 19. With widespread demand for the Dogecoin shirts worn by the Phil Parsons Racing team throughout the Talladega Superspeedway and Sprint All-Star race weekends, the team agreed to not only produce similar t-shirts, but also to utilize the proceeds of the sales for another primary race sponsorship. Needing to sell at least 5,000 t-shirts, they were able to meet their goal within just six days to confirm sponsorship for the Geico 500 at Talladega Superspeedway later this year. Earlier this year, reddit user and tech fan Denis Pavel noticed a plain black car with a driver he felt 'raced the wheels off the car' during a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race. The lack of sponsorship caused Pavel to think of some of the significant fundraisers that he's witnessed on the reddit platform, and drove the 16-year-old to utilize the Dogecoin currency to raise sponsorship funds for Wise. Setting and exceeding their goal within the opening week, Dogecoin and reddit partnered with Phil Parsons Racing for the May race at Talladega Superspeedway.(Phil Parsons Racing)(5-22-2014)

Eh to compare what a woman and an African-American went through is a bit apples and oranges. I don't think woman were being horribly murdered for dinner being served late.

Oh they got smacked around plenty in the bigoted south. The point being is.. who did he pave the way for? He broke down the race barrier in NASCAR for who? The 3 african american drivers after him? I think NASCAR and its drivers treated him like shit, but because he went against it to race doesn't make him hall of fame worthy. A stand up gentleman for sure, but no different than any other independent of the time who had to scrape together from nothing to compete. They added in his description "Scott also posted 147 top-10 finishes, more than 25 percent of the races he entered." If you watched Wendell Scott: A Race Story that ESPN did, you'd know that he chose which races to go to so that all the big name drivers would NOT be at to see how many cars were there and the depth of the field in order to get a 9th or 10th and the money that went along with it. Cherry picking races to get a paycheck for being "the best of the rest" isn't hall of fame worthy. Did you ever look at the mans statistics? The ONLY race he EVER finished on the LEAD LAP was the one he won. ONE lead lap finish in 495 races! "In his distinguished career, Scott accumulated 20 top-five finishes including eight of them in the same season he won his first career race, 1964." Those top fives? He was at his very best 5 laps down and as many as 32 laps down.

I just don't see how, compared to the others on the list, he is in the hall of fame other than NASCAR saying "Sorry we treated you like shit."

Maybe NASCAR is coming down with WWE Syndrome: being powerful enough to "change history" and make certain people and events bigger and more important than they really were.

Soon enough, Kyle Busch will be a first-ballot HOF'er and be declared the "Greatest Driver Ever" based solely on his Nationwide and Truck accomplishments.

The most impressive part of Kyle Busch's weekend was when he beat those up-and-comers in the truck race, and then promptly wrecked himself in the Winston against the big boys.

HoF for sure.

Fred Lorenzen was an awesome stock car driver. Rex White was an awesome stock car driver.
Benny will get in and Curtis Turner will get in. It's pointless to make it a competition between them, they're all worthy of being recognised.

As far as Wendell Scott goes, you need to look past stock car racing and to society in general. The South has a terrible reputation for racism and bigotry and yet here was a guy who did what he wanted to do anyway. If NASCAR want to honor that then they can, it's their history to tell however they want.

Anyway, that's my 2¢. I'll move on.

So, why just five inductees for the HoF? Why not more?

I honestly think that 5 inductees per year is a smidge high. The MLB, NHL or NFL can get away with 5 a year because there's a bigger pool to choose from. Racing definitely has a wide array of crew chiefs, engine builders, owners and (obviously) drivers across a bunch of different sub-series, but it's not quite as deep as other sports.

Perhaps having 3 inductees per year would make it slightly more prestigious, and keep the company that much "select" (not sure what other word to use). That's just me, though.

And yeah, I echo what the ost said about Wendell Scott. It's not a Hall of Stats, it's a Hall of Fame. He hasn't exactly blazed a trail (Willy T. Ribbs, Bill Lester and Bubba Wallace... who else?) but... we didn't live in that era. We read about it in textbooks and see pictures, but to have lived it, and gone through it all just for the love of racing, that's a hell of a story.

There are probably many greater astronauts than Neil Armstrong, but Neil's still the one who set the bar just because he was "the guy".

I personally think they should have done 10 for the first 5 years then backed it down to 5 starting year 6. 50 in 5 years is a good chunk. Done.

Yeah, Buzz Aldrin is better!

But yeah, I think 3 makes more sense to me.

In fairness to the NASCAR Hall of Fame... well, that's the thing: It's the NASCAR Hall of Fame. They own the place, they can induct whoever they please.

There's always the International Motorsports HOF if you want a more legit process.
