Right, I thought of that as I was typing, but in terms of lore, in terms of how much of an icon he became, Jimmie could win 8 titles and not reach that same level as Dale. To be honest, Dale could have won 4-5 titles and would still have been the epitome of the hard-charging good ol' boy, and would have attained that same level of importance.

I'm definitely not saying that Jimmie's accomplishments pale in comparison (even though many people here might do that), because that's not the case at all. Just like Petty's era was completely different from Dale's, Jimmie's is different from Jeff's, Dale's, Petty's, etc.

I might not have been a big Dale Earnhardt fan (though a recent home video I found proves I was in the very beginning, at least for a couple weeks), but the guy is undeniably the biggest deal there ever was in the sport.

The biggest difference being Earnhardt had to be best across the whole schedule of tracks, not just specialise in the last 10.
