To be fair Jr had a really good season last year.

But if this new system is supposed to put the emphasis on winning…. Dale Jr didn't win a race in 2013? :?

I think the NASCAR media is just saying that just to get all the dumbass JOONYER fans to favor the new points system when everyone who has even half a brain--let alone working--knows that Matt Kenseth would have been 2013 champion in this new format.

For the people that think this will make the racing more exciting in the final races; how exactly? If they've put all their effort into the points systems rather than the cars, why will the overly aero dependent cars suddenly be able to put on a good show?

Why do you think I've been doing the ARCA thing the past five years? Last year was the first year I could say I was official, but before that I still took pics for teams and worked on research stuff. ARCA still uses a legit system to determine a champion, most of the tracks don't suck (give me Salem,Winchester,Toledo,IRP,Berlin,DuQuoin,Springfield over the 1.5 mile shit) and the cars aren't awful.

You still miss my point. The new proposed system has one requirement: win and you're in (with strings attached, but still). Dale Jr. did NOT win a race at all last season, therefore he is ineligible for the championship under this system.

I'm not gonna do math despite being an Asian because I can't figure this shit out.

You missed this stipulation...

Quote:
If there are fewer than 16 different winners in the first 26 races, the remaining Chase Grid positions will go to those winless drivers highest in points.

That was Dale Jr's ticket in. After that his consistency advanced him through the rounds. During the last elimination races, Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, and Kevin Harvick won, that locked 3 of the 4 final spots to them. The 4th spot went to the highest in points that did not win during those three races. That was Dale Jr, by 13 points over Matt Kenseth, thanks to Matt's shitty Phoenix run. With everyone continuously getting reset, you're either the most consistent over 3 races or you win one of the 3 races. Matt had a shitty stretch of the final 3 races and did not make the cut.

I know it is difficult, but that's how it works!

If the goal is to make winning more important, and it would have made the 2013 Champion a winless driver, its a bullshit idea.

Ultimately, I think the 36 race season long champion is the best way to determine a champion. However, if they are trying to go to a playoff type format like the idea of the chase seems to imply, then they might as well go all out. They can't really do a bracket style like traditional ball and stick sports since it is not a one on one competition. Eliminations like this make sense if this is meant to simulate a playoff system like other sports. In the end, I'd prefer to get rid of the chase all together, but if they are going to have the chase, I'd rather have it be like this than the initial chase format. Now it almost is like having a regular season and a post season instead of 2 seasons.

I think they should have the championship round be held at a different track every year, preferably at a track that has not hosted a Cup race in the last ten years. That would open up tracks like Iowa, Irwindale, Road Atlanta, Road America, Milwaukee, Salem, and many other tracks that are in viable markets that may not normally have a Cup race. This would give variety for people watching on TV, a new challenge for the teams and a lot of hype on the unknown of running at a new track for the championship, plus potentially opening up a new geographic area to the crazy event that is a Cup race.

Of course if you are going for a show to determine the championship with as much of a dramatic punch as possible to tend to today's casual fans, then the championship race should be a 25 lap race among just the 4 eligible for the championship at Bowman Gray. Winner gets $5 million, everyone else gets nothing. That would be the craziest 20 minutes or so in all of sports.

I guess people forgot that the 2013 Nationwide Series title went to a winless driver - Austin Dillon.

And I must add that this happened with NASCAR's help at Homestead bcuz DALE

You can thank Kyle Busch/Brad Keselowski spanking the field (although ineligible for points) for that.

Salem? As in Salem Speedway in Indiana? For Cup you'd need a helluva lot more seats. They'd need to add seats and widen pit road(it's partially gravel) just to get a truck race. Think Bristol, but maybe mid 90s era-number of seats to get the average crowd a Cup race gets today. Not to mention the traffic jams would be hellacious. 20 miles from any interstate.

The funny thing is, you could win the Daytona 500, put no effort in for the next 25 races, and likely qualify for the chase still.

But you would put in effort. More wins = better seeding. I'd feel a lot better going into the Chase with 7 wins and #1 seed than 1 win and #16 seed.
